School of Nursing

Baptist Nursing Fellowship

Meeting needs where they occur is a foundational Christian principle role modeled by Jesus feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, healing the sick, and sheltering the homeless. Whether painting, framing, or roofing, students utilize interpersonal skills combined with novice building skills as student nurses work to meet physical needs through Habitat for Humanity

Students also volunteer at the Stewpot (Feeding the Poor) Ministry and at various health fairs throughout the community, including giving flu shots.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, students paired with faculty Red Cross volunteers at shelters for the homeless and relocated. One group of students and faculty served as relief for healthcare workers in Longview on the coast at the South Mississippi Regional (Mental Health) Center. One of the nursing students was called up with the National Guard to serve on the coast during the time immediately after the storm and faculty and students ministered to her during these difficult weeks.

The School adopted William Carey College School of Nursing after the storm and put together student relief kits and donated books and other necessary school supplies.A group of students and faculty, accompanied by the Dean, drove the trailer full of supplies to Hattisburg where Mary Carol Westfaul Stewart (Dean of William Carey School of Nursing) and students eagerly greeted the delegation.

BNF students are also responsible for organizing the annual Blessing of the Hands, a sacred tradition for the healing hands of nursing.
