Telecommunications
(General Information)
The
Office of Telecommunications is located at 200 South Capitol Street.
Office hours are from 8a.m. to 12:00p.m. and 1:00p.m. to 4:30p.m.,
Monday through Friday.
Each
residence hall room is equipped with a telephone jack which provides
on-campus and local service only. Students are encouraged to have
a room phone so they may be contacted by family, faculty advisors,
and college staff. The college does not supply the phones.
All
telephones connected to the college system must be true touch-tone.
To determine this, listen to the sounds made when each button is
pressed. If a different musical tone is heard for each button pressed,
the telephone is true touch-tone; if a clicking sound is heard, the
telephone is not. Therefore, it is not guaranteed to work on the
college system. Cordless telephones touch-tone signals are not always
recognized by our PBX system.
Student
telephone numbers are permanently assigned to each room. Consequently,
service cannot be altered or changed.
The
University provides telephone service and voice mail to each residence
hall room, however, students must provide their own telephone set.
Students have the option of placing collect calls, using personal
calling cards which are not being charged to their campus number,
and using pre-paid calling cards.
The
University Telecommunications Department does not allow students
to sign up with telecommunications companies that offer voice mail
or long distance from telephone numbers on campus. These services
will result in unauthorized charges being placed on the Universitys
main phone bill. Students signing up for these services will be
responsible for paying the University for any charges incurred
and for canceling the service. If a student desires these services,
it would need to be charged to their home phone numbers.
Information
in the Student section of the Campus Telephone Directory is taken
from data supplied by students to the University. In order to assure
an up-to-date listing in next years Directory, students should
verify with the Office of the Registrar within the first fifteen
calendar days after the beginning of the fall semester that information
on file in that office is correct.
Currently
enrolled students may withhold disclosure of the student information
under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Undergraduate
students who do not wish to have directory information published
must file notice in the Office of the Registrar. Graduate students
must file notice in the Office of Graduate Studies. This must be done
within the first fifteen calendar days after the beginning of the
semester. The University assumes that failure on the students
part to specifically request withholding directory information indicates
the students approval for the disclosure.
Collect
Calls
You are not allowed to make third-party calls or accept collect calls. If you
accept a collect call, it will be billed to the College and will appear on
your account in the Business Office. A fee will be charged for collection.

Profane,
Indecent and Threatening Calls
The
laws of the State of Mississippi provide that it is unlawful for
any person or persons to make any comment, request, suggestion or
proposal over a telephone which is obscene, lewd or lascivious with
intent to abuse, threaten or harass any party at the called number.
