Art Education

Program of Study: The Art Education program of study is designed for students who are interested in a career in the teaching of art. The Art Education major includes course work in design, drawing, art education, painting, sculpture, ceramics, art history, aesthetics, several electives, and culminates in a senior exhibit. The student of Art Education is required to assemble a proficient portfolio of art works indicative of the student's depth of ability and support materials which address the needs of selected Art Education programs at various levels. The program of study for the Art Education major is built with emphasis on the Discipline Based Art Education curriculum program, which includes a concentration on four major areas of study: Art History, Studio Art, Art Criticism and Aesthetics. This framework provides a healthy diet of involvement and activities for most school programs in art, and is sponsored nationally by the Getty Foundation. The Art Education program is designed for students who wish to teach in the public or private schools, but may provide preparation and experience for those students who wish to prepare for teaching at the college level with additional degrees.

Degree Option:
• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) - Total semester hours: 131*

* Note: The 131 hours includes a core curriculum of requirement of 55 hours; the Art Education major carries 51 hours, and the Professional Education required hours are 25. Foreign language is not a requirement for this degree.

Career Opportunities: Career opportunities include teaching positions in public and private schools, and with additional training, experience and degrees, an Art Education could lead to college teaching positions. Teaching positions are also available within various museum settings, and art work produced by a practicing art teacher could provide a second income.
