General
Art
Program
of Study: The General Art program of study is designed for a
student who wishes to focus on the development of studio skills.
The General Art program requires completion of a minimum of 12 semester
hours in one studio area, such as ceramics, graphic design, drawing,
painting, or sculpture. A concentration in a studio discipline will
encourage proficiency for a professional portfolio review, culminating
in a senior exhibition. The General Art program allows the flexibility
of 12 semester hours of art electives beyond the 12 semester concentration
in one studio area. Many General Art graduates pursue graduate degrees
for the purposes of teaching on the college level, for further study
in a studio area that will enhance employment opportunities, and
for personal enrichment.
Degree
Option:
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) - Total semester hours: 130*
* Note:
The B.A. includes twelve semester hours in a foreign language.)
Career
Opportunities: This degree is preparation for a variety of career
opportunities. A partial listing of possibilities include:
Freelance Artist
The artist operates a personal art business through the sale of
paintings, drawings, sculptures, and/or ceramics.
Contracting with Art Galleries
The artist produces work that will be promoted and exhibited by
the gallery. The gallery usually takes care of business details,
which allows the artist to focus on creating art.
Commissions
The artist pursues opportunities to work with clients on a commission
basis. There are many opportunities in the private and public sectors
for artists who can work with the realities of deadlines, budgets,
and pleasing the client. For example, illustrators are in demand
for illustrating books and magazine ads. Working on a commission
basis allows the artist the flexibility that coincides with self-employment.
Teaching Opportunities in Higher Education
The General Art program of study provides a foundation for graduate
school. The completion of a Master of Arts degree allows opportunities
to teach at many junior and senior colleges and universities.
