Interior Design

Program of Study: Interior Design synthesis of the functional and the aesthetic in the designing of interior spaces. The professional designer enhances the function and quality of interior spaces with emphasis on the improvement of the quality of life, increased productivity, and concern for the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The interior design profession requires mastery artistic and organizational skills in order to function effectively as an artist with the ability to find creative solutions to visual problems that are aesthetically pleasing as well as technical and functionally accommodating.

Degree Options:
• Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) - Total semester hours: 130*
• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) - Total semester hours: 130

* Note: The B.A. includes twelve semester hours in a foreign language.)

Career Opportunities:

Residential Design
The residential designer focuses on the designing of private personal living spaces where the occupants are the owners of the space.

Commercial or Contract Design
The contract designer focuses on the designing of public spaces such as hospitals, restaurants, and educational facilities.

Product Design
Interior designers specialize in designing new products to be used in the industry. Examples of products include wallpaper designs, floor covering designs, textile designs, furniture designs, and accessory items.

In-house Designers
Many large corporations employ interior designers to manage the changing space needs of their company. Area companies who employ in-house designers include the Baptist Hospital, the V.A. Hospital, Bell South, and McRae's Department Store.

Specialists
The increasing information base available to the interior designer provides opportunities for specialization. The designer focus on a specific area such as lighting design, carpets, oriental rugs, wall coverings, acoustics, and antique furniture.

Specification Writing
Specifications for the purchase, installation, and maintenance of products become a part of a legal contractual document used by interior design and architectural firms. A specification writer is required to clearly articulate this information in a manner that can be understood and acted upon by all persons involved in the project.
