Undergraduate
Programs
The
Department of Art at Mississippi College offers a full program of studies
leading to the Bachelor's and Master's degrees. We offer the faculty,
facilities, resources, and encouragement which can lead to personal
and professional fulfillment in artistic expression and practice.
Our professional degree programs focus on the exploration and development
of traditional and contemporary skills in visual design and communication.
Mississippi College is a Christian college with classroom instruction
and faculty-student relationships based on principles of spiritual
character and support. The Department of Art encourages the exploration
of art in a creative environment in which Christian values find
exercise in the art experience.
Students
in art can major in art education, general art (studio art), graphic
design, or interior design. The requirements for a degree at Mississippi
College include the earning of at least 130 hours of credit. This
total includes electives outside of the core curriculum, major,
and minor fields. All art majors take the core curriculum of the
college, as found in the catalogue. Students may minor in art as
described in the catalogue.
Art Education
This
major is for students who wish to prepare for teaching art in elementary
and secondary schools. Essentially, art education majors will complete
specified courses in art and education that will fulfill state requirements
for teacher certification. Art education students have the option
of earning either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science
in Education degree.
General Art (Studio Art)
Students choosing this major focus on studio art in concentrated
areas of study as painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, and
photography. Some graduates pursue opportunities in studio art such
as marketing their art through galleries. Others proceed to graduate
school and then to college teaching or museum work. A minor is taken
in an area outside of the Department of Art. The degree is the Bachelor
of Arts.
Graphic Design
Graphic Design encompasses the field of visual communications including
work in print and electronic media including advertising, publications,
religious and other institutional work, business graphics, and other
areas of visual problem solving. Those in graphic design take a
comprehensive program including an internship and electives in art
along with courses in economics, business, marketing, advertising,
and communication as specified in the catalogue for the completion
of the comprehensive major. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science
degree options are available.
Interior
Design
Interior Design majors will complete courses in a number of areas
in a comprehensive program: foundational courses such as drawing,
color and design, drafting and art history; technical courses involving
practical application of interior design principles as they relate
to contract and residential interiors; and selected business courses
which provide a basic understanding of business principles and practices.
Preparation includes emphases on content areas covered by the NCIDQ
examination, portfolio preparation, and internship experiences.
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options are available.
