News from 1999 DR. C. RON CANNON – 1999 DISTINGUISHED BIOLOGY ALUMNUS Dr. C. Ron Cannon, an otolaryngologist, graduated with a degree in biology from Mississippi College in 1972. Subsequently, Dr. Cannon received his M.C. from The University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1976. Dr. Cannon did his internship in internal medicine in the City of Memphis Hospitals. Then he did surgery and otolaryngology residencies at The University of Mississippi Medical Center. Ultimately, Dr. Cannon served as Chief Resident in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology at The University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. Dr. Cannon is an attending physician at several hospitals in the Jackson,MS, area and is associated with the Head and Neck Surgical Group in Jackson, MS. Dr. Cannon and his wife, Sharon Ann, are the parents of three sons: Ron, Cory, and Rob.They reside in Brandon, MS. Dr. Cannon is a deacon at First BaptistChurch, Brandon, MS. In September 1998, Dr. Cannon was elected president-elect of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.Dr. Cannon is the first Mississippian elected to this position. NEW BIOLOGY FACULTY Dr. Stan Baldwin Dr. Stan Baldwin joined the biology faculty in January 1999. Dr. Baldwin earned his B.S. degree in mathematics education from sburyCollege, Wilmore, KY, in 1979. Additionally, he earned the Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1982 and a MA degree in philosophy from The University of Kentucky in 1987. From 1985 - 1988, Dr. Baldwin taught in the Fayette County Schools in Kentucky. From 1989 - 1995, Dr. Baldwin was a graduate student at the University of Kentucky where he earned his Ph.D. in neurobiology and anatomy. From 1995 to 1997 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky Medical School. Then, from 1997 to January 1999, Dr. Baldwin was a postdoctoral fellow at the Ohio State University Medical School in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Baldwin is the husband of Cathy Baldwin who is employed as the Career Services Coordinator at Mississippi College. Dr. Clinton Bailey Dr. Clinton Bailey joined the biology faculty in August 1999. Dr. Bailey earned his B.S. in Biology from MC in 1987. Before entering graduate school, Dr. Bailey worked as a research technician in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS, and as the first environmental safety officer at Mississippi College. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1997 from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg. Then, Dr. Bailey served almost two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the molecular biology program at The University of Missouri, Columbia, before joining the MississippiCollege biology faculty. Dr. Bailey is married to the former Niki Merritt who received her B.S.N. in nursing from Mississippi College in 1990. They are the parents of Trey (Jack Clinton Bailey, III) and twins Benjamin Glenn Bailey and Olivia Grace Bailey who were born on June 4, 1999. Ms. Beth Dunigan Ms. Beth Dunigan joined the biology faculty in August 1999. Mrs. Dunigan earned her B.S. in Science Education from The University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, in 1986, and her MCS in biology from Mississippi College in 1994. Before joining the biology faculty at Mississippi College, Mrs. Dunigan had high school teaching experience at Brandon High School, Watkins High School in Laurel, MS, and most recently at Madison Central High School where she taught biology, chemistry, and physics. Also, Mrs. Dunigan served previously as an adjunct faculty member at Hinds Community College (Pearl campus) and at Mississippi College. She is married to Guy Dunigan who is self-employed with his own company, Conceptual Designs, which sells and installs solid surface counters.
NEWS NOTES Mac H. Alford (’97) is in graduate school at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Amanda Daho (’96) received her Master of Science degree in microbiology from Mississippi State University. Dr. Jason Daniel is practicing dentistry at the Mississippi State Hospital, Brandon, MS. Christy Lynn Greer (’97) and Lieutenant Timothy Scott Turner, United States Army, were married at Poplar Springs Drive Baptist Church, Meridian, MS, on October 3, 1998. Dr. Rodney A. Hunt (’69) practices oral and maxillofacial surgery in Jackson, MS. Nannette Marie King (’97) and Samuel Gerald Tucker (’98) were married in Provine Chapel at Mississippi College on February 20, 1999. Dr. Cecil Knox (’36) is retired in Jackson, MS, and has six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Amanda Kay Lee (’98) and William Alex Broadhead were married at First Baptist Church, Mendenhall, MS, on June 20, 1998. Ashley Nicole Love (’97) and Russell Pierce Sumrall were married at Calvery Baptist Church, Jackson, MS, on July 3, 1999. Chaterine Louise Prestridge (’94) and Francis Marion Phillippi IV were married in Provine Chapel at Mississippi College on April 10, 1999. Dr. Mark Owen Rester (’94) and wife Beverly Burnside are the parents of Julia Owen Rester who was born September 7, 1998. Dr. Rester is a resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. Tina Elizabeth Rushing (’93) and John Austin Woods were married at First United Methodist Church, Indianola, MS, on November 6, 1998. Melissa Renee’ Wharton (’99) and Benjamin Thomas Walsh were married at Daniel Memorial Baptist Church, Jackson, MS, on May 22, 1999. Dr. Landrum B. Shettles (’33) writes that he will be 90 years old on November 21, 1999. Dr. Shettles was recently consulted on the history of assisted reproduction for a TV series produced for British television. HEALTH SCIENCES REPORT 1999 Acceptances Admitted to the study of Medicine at The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC) this fall were Brandon Bean (’98), Keith Brown, (’99), Jeff Cunningham (’99), Alpa Goel (’98), David Hull (’99), Wendy Mayer (’98), David McClendon (’98), and Deborah McGuire (’99). Admitted to the study of medicine at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, The university of Health Sciences, Kansas City, Missouri, was Amanda Daho (’96). Admitted to the study of medicine at Pikeville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Pikeville, KY, was Scott Patterson (’94). Admitted to the study of medicine at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, Des Moines, Iowa, was Matt Miley (’99). Admitted to the study of dentistry at The University of Mississippi Dental School this fall are: Sherry Chance (’99), Sarah Crisler (’97), Jeffrey Ford (’99), Fanasy Prokop (’99), Emily Pugh (’99), Stephanie Sullivan (’99). Admitted to the study of dentistry at The University of Indiana Dental School, Indianapolis, IN, was Rory Frederick (’95). Admitted to The University of Mississippi Medical Center Master of Physical Therapy program Charlee Simmons (’99). Admitted to The Graduate School at The University of Mississippi Medical Center was Wende Joyner (’99).
