Master of Science in Biology (MS - Medical Sciences). The Master of Science in Biology (Medical Sciences) program is designed to prepare students for a career in medical sciences research or for those students wishing to enter medical or dental school. This degree can be completed in one calendar year. This degree meets the requirement for Class AA Standard Educator License provided that the student already has a Class A Standard Educator Lincense.
Admission to the Program:
1. All general requirements for admission to the graduate school of Mississippi College must be met. The MCAT exam or DAT exam may be substituted for the GRE requirement. The following are the minimum scores for standardized exams: MCAT 20, DAT 15 and GRE 850 (Verbal plus Quantitative). Minimum scores must be submitted before acceptance into the program.
2. Sixteen hours of Biology, 16 hours of Chemistry and 8 hours of Physics are required to enter this program.
Requirements of the Program:
This degree is 30 semester hours of graduate work. Students must take a minimum of 6 hours of research courses in biology, Bio 6460 (3 hrs), and Bio 6461 (3 hrs). Research may be done at Mississippi College or another institution, e.g., University Medical Center (Jackson, MS), provided a project is outlined ahead of time. A thesis is optional, but students who wish to do the thesis option must complete Bio 6563 Thesis I (3 hrs) and Bio 6564 (3 hrs) in addition to the minimum 6 hours of research. The remaining hours of the program must be chosen from the following courses:

Bio 5410 (Human Gross Anatomy) (5 hrs) (offered every Spring)
Bio 5412 (Medical Physiology) (5 hrs) (offered every Spring)
Bio 5415 (Immunology) (3 hrs) (offered every Spring)
Bio 5416 (Immunology lab) (1 hr) (offered every Spring)
Bio 5417 (Medical Microbiology) (4 hrs) (offered as needed)
Bio 5425 (Human Neuroanatomy) (5 hrs) (offered every Fall)
Bio 6562 (Research) (1-3 hrs)
Master of Science in Biology (MS - Biological Sciences). This degree meets the requirement for Class AA Standard Educator License provided that the student already has a Class A Standard Educator Lincense.
Admissions to the Program:
All general requirements for admission to the graduate school of Mississippi College must be met.
Twenty four hours of undergraduate work in Biology is required.
Requirements of the Program
1. Students must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work with at least one half the hours being 6000 level. 21-30 graduate hours must be in Biology. Up to 9 hours can be taken in mathematics, chemistry and/or physics. Students who are using this degree to meet the requirements for Class AA Standard Educator License may take EDU 6535 (3 hrs) and EDU 6504 (3 hrs) as part of their 30 total hours.
2. All students must take a minimum of 6 hours of research courses in Biology. Students who wish to do the thesis option must complete Bio 6563 (Thesis I, 3 hrs) and Bio 6564 (Thesis II, 3 hrs) in addition to the minimum 6 hours of research. In their last semester of enrollment, candidates for the MS in Biology must take an oral comprehensive examination based upon course work used to satisfy degree requirements. If applicable, the oral exam will also include a defense of the thesis. If judged unsatisfactory, all or part of the written and/or oral examination may be taken once in the following semester or summer term.
Master's Degree in Combined Sciences (MCS in Biology) . This degree is designed for the person who wishes to pursue a program of graduate study, which will provide added depth in a major as well as supporting information in related fields.
Admission to the Program:
1) All general requirements for admission to the graduate school of Mississippi College must be met.
2) Twenty-four semester hours of undergraduate work in the major field and necessary prerequisites in the minor field.
Requirement of the Program:
1) The major shall consist of a minimum of 18 semester hours and a maximum of 21 semester hours in biology, chemistry or mathematics. Students electing a major in biology may not use CHE 5470 to complete degree requirements.
2) The remaining 9 to 12 semester hours may be chosen from biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics or physics, but with no less than 6 semester hours in any subject area chosen. Students who are using this degree to meet the requirements for Class AA Standard Educator License may take EDU 6535 (3 hrs) and EDU 6504 (3 hrs).
3) A thesis based on laboratory or library research may be substituted for 6 semester hours of course work.
4) In their last semester of enrollment, candidates for the MCS must take an oral comprehensive examination based upon course work used to satisfy degree requirements. If applicable, the oral exam will also include a defense of the thesis.
