Undergraduate:
At the undergraduate level, the
English department offers two degrees: the Bachelor of Arts
in English and the Bachelor of Education in English. The Bachelor
of Arts is designed for students who may wish to pursue a
graduate degree or want to specialize in a field outside education.
The Bachelor of Education in English is for those who wish
to become educators in the field of English.
Bachelor of Arts in English
Major Requirements
The student electing to major in English may choose either
a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree with
a standard educator license. Both degrees require 12 semester
hours of a foreign language. English majors wishing to earn
a standard educator’s license must take the prescribed
Education courses as a part of the undergraduate degree or
pursue the Alternative Route to educator licensure after graduation
with a baccalaureate degree. The student must complete the
University Core Curriculum and must complete within the department
of English, a total of 36 semester hours of work.
English Minor Requirements
The student must complete, within the English department,
a total of 24 semester hours of work including 12 hours of
core, ENG 213 and 9 hours of electives from courses at the
300 or 400 level.
Three-Three Law/English
Program
After the approval of their academic advisors in consultation
with the appropriate department chair, freshman pre-law students
with an acceptable ACT or SAT score may elect to enter the
Three-Three Program. Ordinarily, a 26 ACT score or 1180 SAT
score will qualify a student for the program. Such students
are expected to maintain at least a 3.25 GPA in their undergraduate
work to remain competitive for early admission to the MC Law
School. Students in this program should plan to take the LSAT
as soon as possible after their sophomore year, but no later
than the fall of their junior year, as an acceptable LSAT
score is required for admission to the Mississippi College
Law School. Acceptance into the Three-Three Program, however,
does not automatically guarantee admission to the MC Law School.
Graduate:
The department of English offers the Master of Arts Degree
in English in two separate plans and the Master of Education
in English. The M.A. in English is the stepping stone toward
completition of a Ph.D. in the field, which most often leads
to the position of college professor. The M.Ed. in English
leads to a class AA certification.
To be admitted to the M.A. program
all students must:
1. Meet the undergraduate course requirements for English:
18 undergraduate semester hours in English.
2. Submit critical writing sample with application for admission.
3. Meet GRE requirements: A combined score of 850 on Verbal
and Quantitative sections of GRE General Test or a score of
at least 450 on either section and a score of 2.5 on the Analytical
Writing Assessment. NOTE: Students seeking Class AA Educators
License (M.A. Plan-B) must meet Minimum score requirements
on NTE or PRAXIS set by the state of Mississippi.
4. Have 12 semester hours (or 2 high school credits plus intermediate
level at university level) of course work or the reading knowledge
of one foreign language before admission to candidacy.
General Program Requirements:
Half of the coursework required for any degree program must
be completed in the 6000-level courses. During the semester
of graduation, students must pass written and oral examinations
over all coursework in their degree program.
M.A. Degree-Plan A:
A thirty-hour program requiring a thesis (six semester hours)
and twelve undergraduate level hours in a foreign language
(not counted toward the thirty hours). The M.A. degree is
usually chosen by students who plan to pursue the Ph.D. in
English
M.Ed. in English:
A thirty-hour program of English and Education courses with
no thesis. This program also requires a class A secondary
school teaching certificate before you complete the M.Ed.
The program is designed for those who intend to teach at the
secondary level throughout their career. Completion upgrades
your certificate to AA-level.
Teaching Assistantships:
Students may apply for teaching assistantships which include
a stipend and partial tuition remission. The assistantship
provides instruction in teaching and allows the students to
teach composition courses. For more information and application
materials, contact the graduate
office.
