EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP
(MAINZ, GERMANY)

This program, which dates from 1960, involves a
direct exchange of students between Mississippi
College and Johannes
Gutenberg University
in Mainz, Germany. MC offers a full
scholarship to a student from the American Studies Division of Mainz
University. In turn, the German
university provides the M.C. student with a stipend which covers fees, and
room and board.

When is the program
offered?
Exchange students remain at the respective universities for
two semesters. Mainz University
has a “Winter Semester” (October through mid- February) and a “Summer Semester”
(April through July).
When and how do MC
students apply?
Applicants must submit a resume and a “statement of purpose”
in the form of an essay explaining their interest in the program and their
reasons for wanting to study in Germany.
The resume and essay should be submitted to the Department
of Modern Languages no later than March 1 prior to the beginning of the winter
semester in Mainz. Since only one scholarship is available, a
committee will make the final selection in the event there are multiple
applications.
Who is eligible to
apply for the scholarship?
Candidates must have completed at least four semesters of
college-level work, as well as the equivalent of four semesters of
college-level German. Students currently
enrolled in GER 202 will also be considered. Students from all majors may apply.
What courses are
offered?
The University of Mainz
is a large institution offering courses in many disciplines. Students from MC
usually continue their study of German while in Mainz, but may also enroll for credit or
audit courses in other disciplines as well. Most courses are taught in German
except for those in the areas of British Studies and American Studies. Please see the MC director
of this program for assistance in selecting courses.
Are the course
credits MC credits or transfer credits?
Any credits received in Mainz will be transfer credits. Students are not enrolled at MC while studying
at the University
of Mainz.
Do students have the
opportunity to travel while enrolled at the German university?
University students in Germany enjoy a two-month break
between semesters. This break gives the
MC student time to travel extensively in Germany
or other parts of Europe.
Where do students
live while in Mainz?
Students are housed in dormitories on or near the campus of
the University of
Mainz. Kitchen facilities
are available in most dormitories, and several cafeterias on campus offer
low-cost meals.
How much does the
program cost?
After arriving in Germany, the MC exchange student
will receive a stipend currently equivalent to about $520 per month for ten
months. From this stipend the student
pays the University
of Mainz a fee of $200
each semester and room rent of $250 per month.
The remainder of the stipend may be used to cover the cost of
meals. Students should have personal
funds available for any additional expenses. Travel expenses are not covered by
the scholarship.
Is other financial
aid available?
MC scholarships and other forms of financial aid may not be
applied since the student is not enrolled at MC or a university in the U.S.
