Spain Study Abroad- Summer Program

Can you say “Olé?” Students who participate in the Spain summer program study either in Alicante, Madrid, Barcelona, or other hub city, depending on the year. Classes are taught by professors who are native speakers and taken with students from all over the world. ¡Qué viva España!

When is the program offered?

Because this program is a faculty-led program, the summer program in Spain varies, depending on faculty responsibilities. The program lasts three to four weeks and may begin in late May or late June. Upon completion of courses, students can opt for extended travel time before returning to the states.

When and how do students apply?

Applications are available during the spring semester and may be picked up in the Department of Modern Languages (Jennings 107). The deadline for the summer program is typically the end of February or early March. However, interested students should contact program director, Beth Stapleton (stapleto@mc.edu) early in the semester for specific application information.

Who is eligible to participate?

All students, regardless of major, are eligible. No previous language experience is required.

What courses are offered?

Students can receive credit for up to 6 hours of Spanish and 1 hour of P.E. Courses range from Elementary Spanish to Conversation to Advanced Grammar to Art and History of Spain.

Are the course credits “MC credits” or do they transfer into MC?

Students enroll at MC and register as if they were taking courses on-campus. The courses that they will actually take in Spain correspond to course numbers offered here. That way, students earn MC credit while learning abroad. There is no risk in losing credits trough transferring hours.

Does the program include excursions to other cities?

The Spain summer program is full of travel and adventure. Students take classes in the morning and then do local city tours in the afternoon. Once a week, there is a day excursion planned outside of the city. On the weekends, students travel to big hub cities for sponsored excursions. Students may also choose to travel independently to other parts of Spain and Europe at the end of the program.

Where do students live?

Students are required to live in a home-stay environment. This may be a single parent and child, a married couple, a retired couple, or many other options. The university in the host city carefully selects the home-stay families. If there are problems with housing, requests for changes are handled at the university, with assistance from the program director. There is a detailed housing application to best match up students with the appropriate family.

How much does the program cost?

Each summer the program costs vary, depending on the university city and dates of the program. The program costs include tuition at MC and in Spain, housing and meals in the family home, all transportation and lodging on excursions, and some local transportation. The program cost does not include airfare and independent travel. Specific details about program costs are discussed in orientation meetings with the program director. Meetings occur early in the spring semester.

Is financial aid available?

For the summer program, MC scholarships do not apply. External funds, such as grant and loans, may be obtained to help defer the cost. Students should contact a financial aid counselor for details.
