The Department of History and Political Science offers the Master of Arts Degree in History and the Master of Social Science Degree, offered under three separate plans.
General Program Requirements:
Half of the coursework for any degree program MUST be in 6000-level courses. During the semester of graduation, students must pass written and oral examinations over all coursework in their degree program. Also, students choosing the M.A. degree or any of the Master of Social Science Plans in which either history or political science is the declared major MUST take HIS 6555 Historical Research and Methodology.

M.A. Degree:
A thirty-hour program requiring a (six semester hours) and twelve hours in a foreign language (not counted toward the thirty hours). The M.A. degree provide a good foundation for students who plan to pursue the Ph.D. in history.
Students who have received approval for their master's thesis may apply to the Graduate Research Fund for financial assistance to defray some expenses associated with their research. Eligible expenses usually include travel, lodging, copying, and other related expenses approved by the Graduate Research Subcommittee.

Master of Social Science / Plan A:
A thirty-hour program which requires eighteen hours in the declared major (history, sociology, political science, or administration of justice), and six semester in two other minor fields.
This degree plan would be useful for a social studies teacher at the secondary level, but it also provides the necessary eighteen-hours required to teach at the junior or community college level.

Master of Social Science / Plan B:
A thirty-six hour program requiring eighteen hours in two major fields (history, sociology, political science, or administration of justice). Students who complete this program will have sufficient hours to teach in either or both of their major fields at the junior college level. Also, six semester hours thesis in either history or political science is an option in this program.

Master of Social Science / Plan C:
A thirty-hour program primarily designed for secondary social studies teachers who intend to teach at the secondary level throughout their career. This degree plan allows for a twolve-hour major with six semester hours being taken in two others social science fields and six semesters (EDU 6504 Research Methods and EDU 6535 Curriculum Development).
