  • To complete a major in mathematics, students must take :
  • MAT 121 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
  • MAT 122 Calculus with Analytic Geometry II
  • MAT 221 Calculus with Analytic Geometry III
  • MAT 222 Calculus with Analytic Geometry IV
  • MAT 301 Foundations of Mathematics
  • Plus 21 additional hours of courses numbered higher than MAT 222 with at least one course being chosen from each of the following categories:
  • MAT 413 Linear Algebra or MAT 421 Modern Algebra
  • MAT 304 Modern Plane Geometry or MAT 450 Introduction to Real Analysis or MAT 460 Introduction to Topology
  • MAT 253 Introduction to Mathematical Probability and Statistics or MAT 352 Introduction to Differential Equations or MAT 381 Introduction to Numerical Methods
  • Those students wishing to be licensed to teach mathematics should follow the current Secondary Mathematics Status Sheet when selecting mathematics courses.
  • A minor must be taken as specified in a related field.
  • Mathematics Minor Requirements

Students electing to minor in mathematics must complete 18 semester hours of
    work in mathematics, including:
  • MAT 121 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
  • MAT 122 Calculus with Analytic Geometry II
  • MAT 301 Foundations of Mathematics.
  • Note: MAT 100 Developmental Mathematics does not count toward a major, minor, or university core curriculum.

    Master of Science in Mathematics

    (30 Semester Hours)
    Admission to the Program
1 . All general requirements for admission to the graduate school of Mississippi College must be met.
    2. Must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of eighteen semester hours of work in mathematics, the suitability of courses to be determined by the graduate faculty.
    3. GRE Requirement: A combined Score of 850 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE or a score of at least 450 on either section and a score of 2.5 on the Writing Assessment of the GRE General Examination is required.  A successful score on the Praxis can also be considered in lieu of taking the GRE.

    Requirements of the Program
    1. A minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work must be completed.
    2. At least 15 semester hours of the course work must be 6500-level including:
MAT 6520 Selected Topics from Higher Algebra
    MAT 6526 Mathematical Analysis.
    3. A thesis may be substituted for 6 semester hours of course work. A thesis is strongly recommended for students anticipating entering a doctoral program.
    4. In their last semester of enrollment, candidates for the MS must take an oral comprehensive examination based upon course work used to satisfy degree requirements. If applicable, the oral exam will also include a defense of the thesis. If judged unsatisfactory, all or part of the oral examination may be retaken once in the following semester or summer term.

    Masters of Education in Mathematics

1 . Twelve semester hours of graduate credit in professional education core courses.
2 . Eighteen semester hours of graduate work in Mathematics, including:
MAT 6541 Current Topics in Mathematics Education
    MAT 6551 Modern Geometry
    3 . Comprehensive Oral Examination

Masters of Combined Science in Mathematics

1 . The major shall consist of a minimum of 18 semester hours and a maximum of 21 in mathematics.
2 . The remaining 9 to 12 semester hours may be chosen from biology, chemistry, computer science, or physics but with no less than 6 semester hours in any subject area chosen.
    3. In their last semester of enrollment, candidates for the MCS must take an oral comprehensive examination based upon course work used to satisfy degree requirements. If applicable, the oral exam will also include a defense of the thesis. If judged unsatisfactory, all or part of the written and/or oral examination may be retaken once in the following semester or summer term.
