The
Department of Psychology and Counseling occupies the first floor
of Lowrey Hall, a stately building that looks out upon the lawn
and gardens of the quadrangle that has been the center of the
Mississippi College campus for most of its 175 years. Located
opposite Lowrey Hall on the Quad is Provine Chapel, a building
rich in history and the site of numerous special events throughout
the year. Faculty have their offices on the first floor of Lowrey
and teach most of their courses in classrooms throughout the four
floors of the building.
Classes
of a seminar, practicum or internship nature have student/faculty
ratios as small as 5 students per faculty member, while the average
lecture class is limited in size to around 25 students. As a major,
you would be assigned an academic advisor from among the full-time
faculty teaching in the Department and you would meet with your
advisor regularly to work out class schedules and discuss ongoing
issues related to campus life. Department faculty and staff have
state-of-the-art computer systems connected to the internet, and
as a student you would have access to computer labs in Lowrey
Hall as well as in Self Hall just across the street. Students
can obtain a computer account that allows them access to the internet.
In addition, the computers are loaded with all of the regular
software packages needed to do the word processing, data entry,
and data analysis required as part of the coursework you complete
each semester.
The
Department's videotape rooms are available for undergraduate and
graduate students to utilize when completing courses that deal
with counseling skills; and the MC Library and Learning Resources
Center offer up-to-date journals, books, videos, and CDs on a
wide range of psychology and counseling topics.
Two
different counseling clinics are located in the Department, one
for students and the other for residents of the Clinton/Greater
Jackson Metropolitan Communities. These clinics are operated by
faculty and staff who provide a variety of counseling services
and someone is always on call in case of an emergency.
Another
feature of the Department is our Reality Therapy/ Choice Theory
coursework that leads to becoming Reality Therapy certified at
the national level. We also offer a variety of undergraduate and
graduate brief, intensive courses that deal with cutting edge
psychology and counseling topics. Nationally and internationally
known instructors are invited to campus to teach major components
of these courses with the assistance of members of our faculty.
