BAL

Molecule of the Month:

May 2005:
British anti-Lewisite (BAL) -  has been in use in the medical community for over 60 years. It is most commonly used as a chelator (remove a heavy metal from the body) in the treatment of poisoning from arsenic, mercury, lead, and gold.  It is also well-known for its role in World War II (WWII) as an antidote to the chemical warfare agent Lewisite (2-chlorovinyldichloroarsine). Although other chelators have now been developed with less toxicity, British anti-Lewisite maintains a prominent role in the treatment of various medical conditions.  Check this link to read more about it!

Chemical & Engineering News established Reel Science in 2004 to encourage critical thinking about the way science is presented in film. The site includes reviews of new theatrical releases evaluated with a scientific audience in mind and recommendations of older films that have been influential or controversial within the science fiction genre. In addition, the site provides news and resources about the ways scientists and screenwriters are working to increase public understanding and appreciation of science in film.   Check this link to read more about it!   Reel Science

Critter Chemistry!

Chemistry isn't confined to laboratories and classrooms. Nature is full of chemistry, too. “Critter Chemistry” demonstrates the active role chemistry takes in the animal kingdom. Some of the articles listed have previously run in Chemical & Engineering News, while other articles are exclusive to C&EN Online.  This site is updated frequently, so be sure to check back often!
