Mississippi College Alpha Chapter
You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

General Information
Alpha Chi membership is the highest strictly academic honor awarded by Mississippi College.  Its requirements are to be in the top 10% academically of all students and to be of junior or senior class rank.  Alpha Chi members are nominated based on their G.P.A., must have “outstanding moral character,” and should display leadership, integrity, and service.  The name of Alpha Chi derives from the initial letters of the Greek words meaning TRUTH and CHARACTER.  Alpha Chi chapters can be found at more than 300 colleges and universities in 45 states.

Membership in Alpha Chi recognizes previous accomplishments and provides opportunity for continued growth and service.  Alpha Chi seeks to find ways to assist students in “making scholarship effective for good.”  Chapters sponsor a variety of local programs designed to enhance the intellectual life and to uphold the ethical standards of their academic communities.  These include scholarly lectures, panel discussions, academic contests, receptions for prospective members, tutorial help and community service projects.  Students who join Alpha Chi can expect several benefits of membership:

  • Recognition as distinguished scholars by the College's most prestigious honorary society
  • A recognition pin and formal membership certificate
  • Opportunities to present scholarly work at campus, regional or national conventions and conferences
  • Opportunites to publish in the Alpha Chi national journal, the Recorder
  • Opportunities to compete through local chapters for Alpha Chi scholarships and fellowships, including
  • H.Y. Benedict Fellowships: $2,500 stipend for graduate or professional study
  • Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships: $1,500 stipend for the senior year of undergraduate study
  • Chapter Information
Mississippi College's Alpha Chi chapter was founded in 1961.  It is the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Chi in Region III.  Region III includes Mississippi, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama.  Mississippi Alpha has a long history of activism including numerous participants in national conventions, local event sponsorship, and even electing national officers.  Dr. George Pittman, former chapter sponsor, served the national convention in numerous capacities, including President.

The Mississippi Alpha chapter sponsors an academic event award each year.  The Forum of Inquiry, Research, and Scholastic Thought (FIRST) is the only campus event at which undergraduates present their scholarship to the entire academic community.  The chapter sponsors and selects the Male and Femal Scholar-Athlete Awards.
