ELIGIBLE USERS

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service through which materials not available in the Speed Library may be obtained from other libraries. ILL services are provided for Mississipi College faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduates. Faculty and staff may use electronic request forms to request an item that is not owned by the Speed Library. Mississippi College students are welcome to submit interlibrary loan requests by filling out paper forms located at the Circulation Desk or Reference Desk. Patrons who are not currently enrolled at Mississippi College or are not members of the university's faculty and staff, may use the interlibrary loan service provided by the local public library.

REQUESTING MATERIAL ON ILL

Before submitting a request, please check MICAL to be sure the material wanted is not available in the Speed Library. Paper request forms are available at the Circulation Desk and the Reference Desk. Requests are not accepted by telephone. Please complete a separate request form for each item. Each bibliographic citation should include complete and accurate information about the item requested and should include the source of the citation. Electronic request forms are only available to Mississippi College faculty and staff. Requests prepared in paper format should be submitted to a Reference Librarian.

TYPES OF MATERIAL AVAILABLE THROUGH ILL

The Interlibrary Loan Staff will attempt to obtain material which is not owned by the Speed Library, books which have been declared lost, books which are checked out and the patron does not respond to the recall, and journal/magazine articles which have been torn out or damaged.

Items which can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan include:

  1. Books
  2. Photocopies of journal articles (Libraries will not lend whole issues of journals.)
  3. Dissertations and theses (Some libraries will lend their dissertations and theses, but those dissertations not available for loan may be purchased by the patron directly from University Microfilms.)
  4. Microfilm (Some libraries will lend newspapers or other materials on microfilm.)

LENGTH OF TIME TO RECEIVE MATERIAL

Speed Library processes ILL requests within 24 hours of receipt, except on weekends and holidays. The length of time before requested items are received varies from one to three weeks according to the response time of the lending library. To avoid delays please check MICAL to see if Speed Library owns the needed item before submitting an Interlibrary Loan request.

COSTS

Books are usually loaned free of charge, but loan fees can range from postage costs to $20, depending on the policies of the lending library. Many libraries in the state and region have ILL reciprocal agreements concerning charges and no fees or photocopy charges are levied. Speed Library does not charge for this service to its borrowers.

Users of Interlibrary Loan services are responsible for all loan fees and photocopy charges passed on by the lending library. Payment is required when material is received. Speed Library staff make every effort to obtain material in a timely fashion; but, if the item arrives after the patron's deadline date, the patron is still responsible for any charges.

NOTIFICATION OF RECEIPT OF MATERIAL

When the material arrives at Speed Library, borrowers in the local calling area will be contacted by telephone or campus mail. Borrowers with long distance telephone numbers should check frequently with the Interlibrary Loan Department at 925.3906 to determine whether material requested has arrived.

LENGTH OF LOAN PERIOD

The lending library determines the loan period for books. The loan time for most books borrowed through ILL is two to four weeks. Renewals of ILL books should be requested only in unusual circumstances. If a renewal request is necessary, renewals must be requested at least four days prior to the due date.

The lending library establishes the conditions under which borrowed material must be used. Items may be restricted to use in the library only, photocopying may be prohibited, etc. A borrower's failure to comply with the conditions of a loan could jeopardize his or her interlibrary loan privileges.

RETURNING INTERLIBRARY LOAN MATERIAL

Borrowers are responsible for the prompt return of loaned materials. Please return all ILL materials directly to the Circulation Desk. Items borrowed on interlibrary loan should never be placed in the book drop.
