The MC Friends project is an elementary reading
improvement project. At Mississippi College, the Community Service Center
sponsors the project. Volunteer tutors from the college provide individualized
tutoring to elementary children who are behind in development of good reading
skills. MC student volunteers go to one of two Clinton Elementary
schools, either Eastside or Northside, where they are trained to work with
students on their reading skills. Volunteers help the children in
grades second, third or fourth read through books and help them understand
what they have read. The elementary children are then tested
over the material that they read. All volunteers must commit
to tutor weekly throughout the semester.
