prerequisites: BIO 111-112 or graduate standing

Catalog Course Description:  A study of human embryology with emphasis on the fundamental developmental processes. Topics include gametogenesis, fertilization, and development of the embryo from zygote through the differentiation of the neural tube. Additionally, topics involving development of selected human organ systems will be covered.  Clinical analysis of birth defects will also be discussed.

Rationale for Course: The Mississippi College Mission Statement stipulates that Mississippi College stimulates the intellectual development of its students through the . . . sciences.  A requisite to the preceding is an understanding of the embryological development of humans.  This course follows human development from conception until birth.  Discussion of birth defects will also accompany each stage of development.  This course will greatly benefit students pursuing healthcare professions as well as those wishing to enroll in a biology graduate program.  Human Embryology prepares students to “utilize their skill, talents, and abilities as they pursue meaningful careers, life-long learning, and service to God and others” as physicians, dentists, physical therapists, environmentalists, educators, and other biologically related professions.

Academic Integrity:  Mississippi College students should display academic integrity in all situations.  Honesty is expected from all students at all times.  Dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarism, and falsifying information, is a serious offense and is subject to severe penalty.  Adherence to the Mississippi College “Honesty Policy” (Mississippi College Undergraduate Bulletin) will be followed.

Methods of Instruction Methods of instruction will include lecture, discussion and video.

Notes will be placed on the website.  You will need to print these and bring them to class.

Attendance and Make-up Policy:

Strict adherence to Mississippi College's class attendance policy will be followed.   “Any student whose absences, whether excused or unexcused, exceed  25% of the class meetings will receive a grade of "F"in the course.”  See the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Attendance in class is expected.  The student (not the instructor) is responsible for any instructions, assignments, or work missed during an absence.  Tests missed during an excused absence must be made up within one week.   Tests missed during an unexcused absence will not be made up.

Special Accommodations:  Students who need special accommodations due to learning, physical, psychological, or other disabilities should contact Dr. Buddy Wagner in the Counseling and Career Development Center.  He may be reached by phone at (601) 925-3354 or by mail at P.O. Box 4063, Clinton, MS 39058.

Evaluation Methods:  Four 100 point exams will be given.. Quizzes will also be given weekly.   Exams and quizzes will be largely objective in format, e.g. true-false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, diagrams for labeling, etc.  Some short discussion and/or listing type questions may be included on the quizzes and exams as well.

Each night, in which there is no exam, you will have a short quiz on previous material.  Each quiz is worth 5 points. I will count your top 7 scores.  Quizzes that are missed will count as a drop quiz.

Graduate assignment:

Working in groups,  graduate students will present a birth defect to the class.  You will need to discuss how the defect occurred during development.  You must use visuals, therefore, PowerPoint is recommended.  You will receive a rubric that will indicate how this will be graded.  This assignment is worth 30 points.

Notes.

You will find your notes at http://www.mc.edu/campus/users/dunigan/bio409_notes.htm.  You will need a MC username and password to get these.

You are expected to have these at each class.  These notes are not all inclusive.  You may need to add to these during class each week.
