Text:    Experiencing Intercultural Communication  (3rd Edition)    

 

Rationale:  This course will introduce students to various cultures in order to develop an awareness and understanding of how culture influences perceptions and actions.  Students will study communications skills drawn from a cross-cultural frame of reference.

 

The course is designed to bring an understanding of the meaning of culture, an awareness of cultural diversity, and knowledge of the tools which aid in cross-cultural understanding.

 

Course Objectives:  The student will learn to

A.        be aware of and appreciate cultural differences

B.         communicate more effectively in a cross-cultural environment

C.        understand the dynamics involved in cross-cultural communication.

 

Course Activities:  The student is expected to

A.        attend class regularly

B.         complete all assignments as scheduled

C.        participate in classroom activities and discussions

 

Attendance Policy:

A.        The student is expected to attend classes and to complete all work required for the

            course.

B.         In accordance with the MC General Bulletin, absences totaling 25% or more will

            result in no course credit.  If a student misses more than the number of class

            periods specified in university policy and believes that there are reasonable

            explanations for the absences, he/she may appeal the absences to the dean of

the school in which the course is being taught.  (See 2008-2009 Undergraduate Catalog).

C.        Habitual tardiness will be counted as an absence.

 

 

Makeup Policy:

A.        Scheduled tests cannot be missed unless for illness or emergency and professor

            must be advised prior to the test.

B.         Make-up for scheduled tests is the last class period of the semester.

might require special arrangements to maximize their learning and participation in the class.

 

Evaluation:     Evaluation is based on

A.        satisfactory completion of all class assignments and adherence to class policy

B.         participation in class discussions

C.        group project (includes oral and written presentation)

D.        satisfactory and timely completion of written assignments  

E.         announced tests (there will be three scheduled during the semester)
