309/310 GERMAN CONVERSATION
AND COMPOSITION
CREDIT: 3 SEMESTER HOURS
PREREQUISITE: GERMAN 201-202 OR 3 UNITS OF HIGH SCHOOL

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Practice in German conversation and composition based on practical and cultural topics. Designed for the non-native speaker of German.
I. RATIONALE: The purpose of foreign language study is to acquaint students with a culture, a language and a literature other than their own. Since language is not only a vehicle of communication, but also an integral part of a culture, students who apply themselves to such a study broaden the scope of their understanding by virtue of their contact with the spoken and written ideas in the language of their choice.
II. STUDENT OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES: By the end of the semester, the student will demonstrate knowledge of the German language by
A. listening to and understanding a proficient speaker at a normal conversational tempo on general and nontechnical topics.
B. speaking at a normal conversational tempo on general and nontechnical topics.
C. writing general, nontechnical prose with grammatical accuracy and clarity.
D. reading and comprehending general, nontechnical materials.
III. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Dishonesty, such
as cheating or plagiarism...will be regarded as a serious offense subject to
severe penalty, including, but not limited to, loss of credit and possible
dismissal. See the Mississippi

IV. COURSE CONTENT: Emphasis is placed on
A. the acquisition of essential vocabulary needed to communicate in everyday life.
B. the maintenance of general conversation while learning how to develop discussions around certain topics.
C. writing short paragraphs on given topics.
D. the further development of skills in reading comprehension and the acquisition of additional vocabulary through reading.
V. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
Students will interact with the professor and one another in class in German in order to
further the development of their communicative skills. Students will use German to
answer
questions and participate in discussions pertaining to reading materials.
VI. REQUIRED PRACTICES:
A. attend class regularly.
B. use German in class.
C. complete all oral and written assignments as scheduled.
D. participate in classroom and laboratory activities.
IX. EVALUATION:
A. Evaluations are based on
1. satisfactory completion of all class assignments and adherence to class policy.
a. Oral participation: The student is expected to participate fully in all activities.
b. Oral presentations: Preparation for group activities and/or discussions or individual presentations.
c. Written work may consist of quizzes as well as written homework, including specific exercises and compositions.
2. unit exams. Three (3) unit exams are scheduled during the course of the semester.
3. the final examination. A final examination will be given at the regularly scheduled final exam period.

X. ATTENDANCE POLICY:
A. The student accepts the responsibility of attending all classes and completing all work required for the course.
B. Since the final evaluation is based in part on class participation, absences will affect grades adversely.
C. Absences in excess of seven (7) will
result in no course credit. If a student
misses more than the number of class periods specified in university policy and
believes that there are reasonable explanations for the absences, he/she may
appeal the absences to the dean of the school in which the course is being
taught. Students may obtain a Student
Absence appeal Form from the office of the appropriate dean. (
XI. MAKE-UP POLICY
A. Each student is expected to complete all homework assignments and take all exams and quizzes as scheduled.
B. If a student must miss a unit exam because of illness, an emergency, or a school-sponsored function, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the professor and arrange to take the exam at another time.
XII. CLASSROOM POLICY: The student is expected to
A. be on time for each class.
B. bring his/her textbook or other required materials to class every day.
XIII. SUPPORT SERVICES:
A. Disabilities. Students should immediately inform the instructor of any disabilities that might require special arrangements to maximize their learning and participation in the class.
B. Tutoring. Students desiring tutoring in German may check with the Department of Foreign languages for a list of individuals who have indicated they will tutor students of German.
