DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE
A.
D. Downing Scholarship Fund:
Established
April, 1990 by Albert Dalier Downing III of Jackson,
MS.
The Downing Scholarship is awarded to a junior in either history or
political
science who has maintained at least a B average in his/her major field.
Hicks-Girling
Political Science Scholarship Fund:
Established
May 1, 1997 by Dr. Bill Hicks of Clinton, MS., and Mr. Robert G. W.
Girling,
III of Austin, Texas. Students eligible for the Hicks-Girling
Scholarship
must have junior standing and an overall 3.0 GPA. Preference is
given
to students who have an interest in teaching either law or political
science
at the college level.
Dr.
Kenneth H. Loflin Scholarship Fund:
Established
August, 1985 by Mr. Jim Loflin of Clinton, MS. The Loflin
Scholarship
provides assistance to majors in the Department of History and
Political
Science, with preference given to those majoring in history.
McMillan
History Department Honors and Scholarship Endowment:
Established
December, 1997 by Dr. Edward and Mrs. Carnette McMillan of Clinton,
MS.
This fund provides support for honors, awards, and scholarships
presented
by the Department of History and Political Science. This includes
all awards presented by the department to students at the university's
annual Honor's Day Ceremony.
Dr.
and Mrs. George C. Osborn Fund:
Established February, 1974 by Dr. and Mrs. Osborn. Income from
this
fund is to be used for the purchase of books in American History,
primarily
since 1900.
Absalom
William and Edna Sanders Memorial Fund:
Established
January, 1998 by Sarah Edna Sanders Dees of Tucson, Arizona in memory
of
her parents. Income from this fund is to be used for the purchase
of books related primarily to southern history.
Vanguard
Endowment Fund:
Established
July, 1997 by the Department of History and Political Science. This
fund
supports scholarly activities of major in the department--graduate and
undergraduate. The fund also supports the purchase of specialized
materials for use in the classroom or otherwise applicable for support
of the department's academic program.
Lectureships
Edward
N. Akin Lectureship:
Established October, 1990 by
the Faculty of Mississippi College to honor the life and work of Dr.
Edward
N. Akin, Professor of History at Mississippi College, 1977-1990.
R.
Glen
Eaves Lectureship in English and European History
Established in 1992 by Dr.
Bernerd
C. Weber, a former professor of Dr. Eaves, the lectureship annually
brings
outstanding scholars in the fields of English and European history to
the
Mississippi College campus.
