Over the past 24 years, since its humble beginnings in June of 1984,  when Mississippi College began the Administration of Justice Program, there have been over 200 Bachelor of Science graduates as well as 59 graduates in the Master of Social Science Program. Our graduates are currently enjoying careers at the local, state, and federal levels as well as in private industry.  Since its inception the Administration of Justice Program has been under the direction of Dr. Harry Porter, who prior to coming to Mississippi College in 1984, taught at the University of Southern Mississippi and served for eight years as the Director of the Criminal Justice Program at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS. The largest number of majors occurred in 1991 when there were a total of sixty-five undergraduate students majoring in the Administration of Justice. Both the B.S. and the M.S.S. degrees are now offered to Administration of Justice majors. For the past several years the program has averaged 45-50 undergraduate students and 10-12 graduate students per semester. A minor requires 18 semester hours of course work.

Careers in Criminal Justice

While our society is trying to explain why we  experienced a rise in the crime rates during 2005 and 2006, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in American are recruiting college educated criminal justice professionals. Students who choose  to enter the field of criminal justice today must possess specialized analytical skills, technological skills and interpersonal skills, as well as an informed perspective on the social, informational and scientific components of effective crime prevention and private security. A Bachelor of Science Degree or a Master of Social Science Degree in the Administration of Justice Program at Mississippi College will prepare you to meet this growing demand at the local, state, and federal levels of law enforcement. 

Dr. Porter expects to see a continued growth in the undergraduate and graduate curriculums at Mississippi College.. New courses have been added to the curriculum  as well as a few on-line course offerings and include: Juvenile Gangs, Arson Investigation, Crime Scene Investigation, Organized Crime, Homicide Investigation, Police Ethics, Crime Control in America and Contemporary Terrorism in 21st Century America. With the addition of excellent adjunct professors from area criminal justice agencies, the Administration of Justice Program, will continue to provide the quality education required to meet the demands of the everychanging world we live in today.

The Administration of Justice Program began a Master's of Social Science Degree Program in the fall of 1992. To date the program has 56 graduates (listed below). The M.S.S. degree program requires 30/36 hours, and does not require a thesis.

Austin Morrow, a May, 1986 graduate, is an insurance agent for ALFA Insurance in Gainesville, Florida.

Mary Jo Naico, a 1999 M.S.S. graduate, is a Customer Service Representative for Third Party Verification  for the Verizon Corporation in San Angelo, TX and received the 2002 Volunteer of the Year Award from the San Angelo, TX  Human Society, where she volunteers as their Rescue Coordinator.

Christopher Bizot, a May, 2000 graduate is currently the Tennis Coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Palm Beach,Florida and received his M.S.S. Degree in History from Mississippi College in December, 2002.

Thomas "Eddy" Addison, a December, 2000 graduate, recently graduated from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer's Training Academy as one of the top ten "COPS" in his class and is currently working as a patrol officer in Ridgeland, MS.

Scott Lollar, a December, 2000 graduate and a former Patrolman for the Clinton, MS Police Department, is currently  one of two Mississippi College Administration of Justice Graduates  working  as a Special Agent for the Secret Service in the Jackson, MS office.

William Dickson, a May, 2000 M.S.S. graduate, recently graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA and the United States Secret Service Special Agent Training Course and has been assigned to the Miami,Florida field office.

Stephen McCraney, a December, 2000 graduate, recently left his position is a Field Officer IV with Probation and Parole Division of the Mississippi Department of Corrections and served a tour of duty with the Air Force as a Reserve Officer in Iraq.He is currently working for the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security.

Ben Walsh, a 2000 M.S.S. graduate, recently left his position as a Lab Agent with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations Firearms Unit in Denver, Colorado and completed training at Quantico Virgiania to become a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

William Messina, an August, 2000 graduate, recently left the  Warren County Sheriff's Department  in Vicksburg, MS and began training as a Federal Air Marshal.

Milton "Butch" McCardle, an August, 2000 graduate, and a former Probation and Parole Officer for the Mississippi Department of Corrections graduated from the Mississippi College School of Law in May, 2005.

Carole Hawkins, a December, 2000 B.S. and 2005 M.S.S. graduate, and a former Correctional Officer in the Women's Section of the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl, MS, is currently working  as victim advocate for the MADD program in Pearl, Mississippi.

Randy Ruffin, a 2000 M.S.S. graduate, is working as a Detective and a member of the STAR team  for the Clinton,MS Police Department and serves as an adjunct professor in the Mississippi College Administration of Justice Program teaching Police Process, Arrest, Search and Seizure,and Interview and Interrogation Techniques classes.

Patrick Opdyke, a 2001 M.S.S. graduate, is a Criminal Investigator with the Rankin County Sheriff's Department.

Denise A. Hollingsworth, a May 2001 graduate, is currently the Manager for Finance and Insurance at Rogers-Usury Honda of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

John Haynes, a December, 2001 graduate, completed Officer's Candidate School in the United States Air Force and  Flight Training School and is currently serving in the Middle East Area of operations. .

Tim Keen, a May, 2001 graduate, a former ABC Agent with the Mississippi Tax Commission completed his M.S.S. Graduate Program at Mississippi College in May, 2006 and is currently working as a special agent with the Secret Service.

Stan Fisher, a May, 2001 graduate, recently graduated in the top ten of his training class at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer's Training Academy and is currently working as a Deputy Sheriff for the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Scott Herrington, a 2001 M.S.S. graduate, a patrolman for the Clinton, MS Police Department was recently promoted to Sergeant.

Patrick McCarthy, a 2002 M.S.S. graduate, is currently teaching and coaching baseball at Freed-Hardman University.

Rick Haggard, a 2002 B.S. graduate, is currently working as a Deputy Sheriff for the Clay County Sheriff's Department in West Point, MS and was recently married Nov. 11, 2006.

Bill DePriest, a 2002 M.S.S. graduate, is currently a licensed insurance representative with Pennsylvania Life Insurance Co. in Jackson, Mississippi .

Donnela Green, a 2003 M.S.S. graduate, is currently teaching at Pearl High School, in Pearl, MS.
