Professional Development Plan

My professional development plan has been divided into four major areas which I feel are valuable assets once they are obtained and mastered.  These include written communication, oral communication, group/team communication, and a functional area of knowledge.

Written Communication
Having completed two courses in English Composition and a course in Professional Communication Skills, I feel that I have obtained many great skills that will be beneficial to my future.  My goal for my written communication skills is to master these skills while adding other good skills and practices along the way.  I plan on achieving this goal by:

• Completing a number of written communication courses as I pursue a communications minor.
• Applying the skills and practices that I have learned as I continue to complete class reports and projects.
• Instilling disciplinary actions with my written work such as proofreading

Time Frame

• Communication minor, will be completed by May 2005

Oral Communication
My goal for my oral communication is to improve on the speaking skills that I have already obtained through experience in public speaking.  These skills have been obtained through class speeches, speeches for awards, and other similar activities.  I also plan on improving the interpersonal oral communications skills that I have obtained through a course in Business Communication.  I plan to further enhance these skills by:

• Completing a course in Business Communication, as well as many other oral communication courses as I pursue a minor in communications.
• Attending public speeches so that I will have the opportunity to listen, watch and learn from others who have masters this type of communication.
• Continuing to build upon my experience through future public oral communication.
• Practicing the skills that I learn in my day to day oral communication.

Group/Team Communication Skills
My goal for my group/team communication skills is to learn balance my influence in a group or team.  I have the tendency to try to take charge and be the leader in a group most of the time, but I realize that is not always the best asset to the over all group or team goal.  I plan on achieving this goal by:

• Practicing the concepts about group communication that I have obtained in a Professional Communication course.
• Practicing these concepts and skills through group efforts in student government, intramural athletics, and service organizations.
• Continuing to build upon my knowledge of group/team communication through additional communication courses.

Functional Area Knowledge
My goal for my functional area knowledge is to remain as knowledgeable as possible with an ever-changing, technological world.   I plan to keep my skills as well as my over all business knowledge as sharp and as up to date as I can.  I plan to achieve these goals by:

• Continuing to expand my knowledge and education by completing a course in Business Software Applications in the Spring of 2003, along with other software and applications courses.
• Staying up to date on the latest business technology, through reading the newspaper and magazines.
