NAMING GERMAN COMPOSERS OF SONGS AS WELL
1. Read and take notes from text as assigned. The date the reading is listed in the TENTATIVE OUTLINE is the day the reading is expected to be completed.
2. Prepare for listening test as described in the sheets under LISTENING IDENTIFICATION TESTS.
3. Compile an annotated bibliography. Using the lists of extensive references noted in the text as a general base, examine from the MC Library three books about the art song in general (like your text); seven books about specific areas, i.e., books which limit the scope to one composer, one nationality, or one era; and ten musical scores of art songs. After making a correct bibliographic entry, make a few comments regarding the contents of the book. Also note the library call number or indicate that the book is from your personal library or elsewhere. All students may and PERFORMANCE MAJORS MUST INCLUDE FIVE BOOKS ON TRANSLATIONS AND PHONETIC READINGS.
4. Create an hour-long recital program containing German Lieder and French Mélodie suitable for your voice. Include program notes and translations. You may use the program format comparable to that of the MC Music Department. Include the name of any assistants.
5. The summary of your article is due on the day the syllabus indicates a study of that composer and his works. This is a list of the composers from which you may choose. See me for the
specific references.

LISTENING IDENTIFICATION
TESTS
These selections will be on reserve in the LRC. Ask for
MUS 457 and the specific date.
The date represents the day the test will be given on the songs. You will be expected to list the name of the selection to be aurally identified (each song title will be listed on the board), the name of the cycle or group of which the song is a part, when necessary, and the name of its composer. Then include facts/information on at least four of the following applicable points: the name of the poet; poetic theme or subject; accompaniment; formal structure; opus/number and/or catalog identification; the date of the composition and/or publication; dedication of song; date, occasion, place, people in first performance; any other pertinent textual, musical or historical data; etc. When the information listed above cannot be found in your text, search sources listed in your bibliography and elsewhere when necessary. Liner notes usually contain good material also. Following the musical score when listening is an important step in learning about song literature; however, scores will not be on reserve. Find one in the library or preferably use your own when possible.
