The Gobrecht Eagle Quarterly

1854-O Eagle

Obverse type introduced in 1848 at New Orleans, type 5. Three obverse variations have been noted dealing with the size of the year logotypes. The continuing logotype is of the large (about 2.0mm) style begun in 1842 and varying a little year-to-year. The reverse is of type c.

Obverse varieties:

a) normal year logotype: sometimes called 'small date', though '1854' is of normal, continuing size. Year (2.1mm) is low in field below truncation and left of center; lower-left serif of '1' near dentils.

b) large year logotype: sometimes called 'large date' or 'huge date', the latter being somewhat more descriptive. Year (2.5mm) virtually fills the field below the truncation. Two distinct varieties are known:

i) year slightly left of center: top of '1' touches truncation, serif on middle stroke of '4' left of the right truncation tip.

ii) year slightly right of center: top of '1' close but not touching truncation, serif on middle stroke of '4' vertically beneath right truncation tip.

Reverse variety:

a) Usual round mintmark "O" placed close to eagle above and just left of the space between E N, between claw and arrow feather, closer to latter, somewhat weakly impressed.
