Welcome to the Christian Life Section of the Mississippi College
Web-Site. As you scroll and click through you will notice student
organizations, agenda items, activities, and an array of what could
be referred to as extra-curricula “stuff.” Do not let
this structure lead you to believe that being Christian is an “add-on” feature
at Mississippi College. Being intentionally and distinctively Christian
is what makes Mississippi College unique.
Some people might think that since we are affiliated with the Mississippi
Baptist Convention that makes us a Christian University. It is not
our affiliation that makes us Christian, but rather our conviction
that we serve society as part of the church’s mission. The
church has many tasks, including worship, evangelizing, ministry,
missions, fellowship, and discipleship. All these tasks are pursued
within Mississippi College, but our primary task is discovering and
transmitting the truth and cultivating the life of the mind. If the
life of the mind is not understood as an integral part of Christian
discipleship and mission, the term “Christian university” is
indeed, as some claim, an oxymoron. While Mississippi College is
not a church, it is from the church and serves the church by enabling
the church to serve the world more fully. A university that is not
integral to the Christian mission will in time become alien to the
Christian mission.
