Evaluation

Information about evaluating whether or not an individual has dyslexia

The purpose of conducting a comprehensive evaluation of an individual suspected of having dyslexia is to identify a pattern of strengths and deficits that are typical of dyslexia.

In addition to obtaining a diagnosis of dyslexia, this profile can be utilized to develop an appropriate instructional plan for the individual.

Our Evaluation Process

Our dyslexia evaluation process consists of standardized, norm-referenced assessment tools that are administered by licensed practitioners. The evaluation generally includes four components:

Cognitive Skills Assessment

The cognitive skills assessment which provides a measure of the individual's core ability to learn. This assessment can pinpoint the causes of persistent learning problems.

Achievement Assessment

The achievement assessment measures proficiency in specific subject areas and can alert parents to learning gaps in their child's education.

Oral and Written Language Assessment

The oral and written language assessment measures expressive, receptive, and written language skills necessary for academic achievement. Often times, undiagnosed language disorders are the underlying cause of learning difficulties.

Reading Assessment

The reading assessment focuses on the necessary skills and system for fluent, efficient reading. This assessment can provide specific information that can be beneficial in effective program planning for a child.

This evaluation usually takes 3½ to 4 hours to administer. Breaks are given as needed. You will receive a detailed report within 5-6 weeks that will help you and the school understand the diagnosis.  Accommodations will also be suggested.
