Martha Hutson

In his book, The Courage To Teach, Parker Palmer says "good teachers join self and subject and students in the fabric of life."  I try to live out that personal philosophy as I teach classes at MC in history, geography, and education.  If you appreciate an interactive class experience, come join me in the classes listed below.

About Me

From Grenada County, Mrs. Hutson received a B.A. degree in History from William Carey University and a Master's in History from the University of Southern MS.  She has done additional study at the National Geographic Society and has served as a Teacher Consultant for the Mississippi Geographic Alliance since 1990. She taught 28 years in the public schools and was selected Mississippi's Teacher of the Year, 1997-98.  She is active in a number of professional organizations and is sponsor of a campus education chapter for teacher candidates.  She presents workshops to local, state, and national audiences.  She is director of an annual Pre-Service Geography Institute held each February.  In the summer of 2009,  Mrs. Hutson collected caterpillars in the rain forests of Ecuador as part of a two-week Earthwatch expedition and in July, 2010,  she experienced  southern Africa with other American educators during a month-long trip to South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.  Mrs. Hutson was selected as the university's 2010 Humanities Lecturer and received a Distinguished Teaching Award in Higher Education from the National Council for Geographic Education in August, 2011.
