Dr. Mayfield is Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He received his B.A. in Sociology from Louisiana College, his M.A. in Sociology from Stephen F. Austin State University, and the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) in Psychology and Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned a graduate certificate in Gerontology and the Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree with an Administrative focus in Health from the University of Georgia. Dr. Mayfield received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Emory University.
Dr. Mayfield’s major areas of interest are social gerontology and health. He teaches courses in aging, medical and health care, research methods, social psychology, social theory, and global sociology.
Dr. Mayfield is a Certified Professional Sociological Practitioner, a Certified Health Education Specialist, and a Licensed Certified Social Worker in the state of Mississippi. He is a member of the American Sociological Association, the National Association of Social Workers and the Southern Gerontological Society. He has served as staff member, director, supervisor, and consultant in various health and social services facilities since 1974. He has participated in a variety of research, clinical and professional training activities as well as obtaining grants and authoring publications and other scholarly writings. Gary has presented at professional conferences, continuing education workshops, and organization in-service training sessions. He has been active in serving the community as a facilitator, advisor, mentor, and advocate for many issues and concerns of health and social services professionals, students, and the general public. Dr. Mayfield has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology, social work, human services, gerontology or geriatrics since 1982. Dr. Mayfield speaks on a number of topics related to gerontology and helps organizations and churches vision through changing demographics.
