Celebration of Culture

Each year, the Office of Global Education hosts the Celebration of Culture: an event that promotes the wide array of cultures that are represented here at Mississippi College. Student leaders don traditional cultural attire and organize a table to represent their nation, with traditional food, folk art, celebratory videos and photos, games, and souvenirs. In under two hours, students are able to "travel the world" and learn about the cultural diversity represented in the student body at MC.
On November 3, the Office of Global Education hosted its annual Celebration of Culture. Representatives from 14 different countries donned traditional attire and organized tables to represent their homes. Participating countries included Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Kyrzgyzstan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkey, the United States, and Vietnam.
Lina Do, a student from Vietnam, said “A lot of people don’t know that much about Vietnam. Since I’m just starting out here (at MC), I want to make people more aware of my culture.”
Not only did the 150 plus attendees grow in their knowledge of different cultures from hearing descriptions and seeing artifacts, but they also were able to learn from tasting different foods. Each table had samples of traditional food items. Everything from Chinese candy to a full Saudi Arabian meal was served to students who wanted to taste the authentic food prepared by their international peers.
Chris Peace, a senior at Mississippi College said, “I think it’s a mind-opening experience for all international students to know that so many students are interested in their culture.”
