Configuring Windows 95/98/ME for Dial-In

  1. Check that Dial-Up Networking is Installed -- Double-click My Computer. If you see "Dial-Up Networking" in the box, then the Dial-Up Networking facility is already installed and you can skip the next step.
  2. Install Dial-Up Networking -- Be sure you have your Windows 95/98 CD ROM, diskettes, or that the Windows 95/98 installation files are already on your PC. To install Dial-Up Networking, follow these steps:
    1. Use Start to get to "Settings" then choose "Control Panel". This brings up the control panel.
    2. Double click "Add/Remove Programs".
    3. Click on the "Windows Setup" tab.
    4. Double click on "Communications" in the list. This opens up the "Communications" window.
    5. Place a check mark by "Dial-Up Networking".
    6. Close the "Communications" window by pressing OK.
    7. Close the "Add/Remove Programs" window by pressing OK.
    8. Windows 95/98 will install Dial-Up Networking. During the course of the install, Windows 95/98 may request that you insert the Windows 95/98 CD ROM or diskette and that you tell it where the CD ROM or diskette has been mounted.
    9. After installation, go back to step 1 to insure that Dial-Up networking has been installed.

  3. Configure Dial-Up Networking -- Follow these steps to configure Dial-Up Networking.
    1. Use "Start" to get to "Settings" then "Control Panel".
    2. Launch (double click) on "Network".
    3. In the "Networks" window under the "Configuration" tab, you should see "Dial-Up Adapter". If you see any other entries besides "Dial-Up Adapter" highlight them and press the "Remove" button. Only "Dial-Up Adapter" should be in the list at this point in the setup procedure.
    4. Press "Add" to bring up the "Select Network Component Type" window.
    5. Double click on "Protocol" to bring up the "Select Network Protocol" window.
    6. In the "Manufacturer's" list, find "Microsoft" and click on it once. This displays a list of protocols from Microsoft in the list on the right side of the window under "Network Protocols."
    7. Highlight "TCP/IP" and press "OK." You should return to the "Network" window and see "TCP/IP" in the list with "Dial-Up Adapter."
    8. Press "OK". This should return you to the Control Panel. Close the Control Panel.
    9. Double-click My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking. This brings up the "Dial-Up Networking" window.
    10. Double-click "Make A New Connection." At this point Windows 95/98 may go through steps to install your modem, if that has not already been done. The steps for installing the modem are not given here, but are self-explanatory.
    11. Change the name of the connection from "My Connection" to to "MCnet Dialin".
    12. Enter the phone number to the communications server as you would dial it from your phone. If you are calling from off-campus then the number is "925-3980". If on-campus, then the number is "6000".
    13. For "login" and "password" use your assigned Novell login and password. Be sure to type in upper and lower case letters exactly!

  4. After Dial-In Networking has been installed, and you have defined a connection for "MCnet Dialin", double click on "MCnet Dialin" to connect to the communications server. It can take up to a minute for the connection to complete. After your login is verified and you are connected, the dial-up box will show a "Disconnect" button.
