Configuring
Windows 95/98/ME for Dial-In
- Check
that Dial-Up Networking is Installed -- Double-click My Computer.
If you see "Dial-Up Networking" in the box, then the Dial-Up Networking
facility is already installed and you can skip the next step.
- Install
Dial-Up Networking -- Be sure you have your Windows 95/98 CD ROM,
diskettes, or that the Windows 95/98 installation files are already
on your PC. To install Dial-Up Networking, follow these steps:
- Use
Start to get to "Settings" then choose "Control Panel". This brings
up the control panel.
- Double
click "Add/Remove Programs".
- Click
on the "Windows Setup" tab.
- Double
click on "Communications" in the list. This opens up the "Communications"
window.
- Place
a check mark by "Dial-Up Networking".
- Close
the "Communications" window by pressing OK.
- Close
the "Add/Remove Programs" window by pressing OK.
- Windows
95/98 will install Dial-Up Networking. During the course of the
install, Windows 95/98 may request that you insert the Windows 95/98
CD ROM or diskette and that you tell it where the CD ROM or diskette
has been mounted.
- After
installation, go back to step 1 to insure that Dial-Up networking
has been installed.
- Configure
Dial-Up Networking -- Follow these steps to configure Dial-Up Networking.
- Use
"Start" to get to "Settings" then "Control Panel".
- Launch
(double click) on "Network".
- In
the "Networks" window under the "Configuration" tab, you should
see "Dial-Up Adapter". If you see any other entries besides "Dial-Up
Adapter" highlight them and press the "Remove" button. Only "Dial-Up
Adapter" should be in the list at this point in the setup procedure.
- Press
"Add" to bring up the "Select Network Component Type" window.
- Double
click on "Protocol" to bring up the "Select Network Protocol" window.
- In
the "Manufacturer's" list, find "Microsoft" and click on it once.
This displays a list of protocols from Microsoft in the list on
the right side of the window under "Network Protocols."
- Highlight
"TCP/IP" and press "OK." You should return to the "Network" window
and see "TCP/IP" in the list with "Dial-Up Adapter."
- Press
"OK". This should return you to the Control Panel. Close the Control
Panel.
- Double-click
My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking. This brings up the "Dial-Up
Networking" window.
- Double-click
"Make A New Connection." At this point Windows 95/98 may go through
steps to install your modem, if that has not already been done.
The steps for installing the modem are not given here, but are self-explanatory.
- Change
the name of the connection from "My Connection" to to "MCnet Dialin".
- Enter
the phone number to the communications server as you would dial
it from your phone. If you are calling from off-campus then the
number is "925-3980". If on-campus, then the number is "6000".
- For
"login" and "password" use your assigned Novell login and
password. Be sure to type in upper and lower case letters exactly!
- After
Dial-In Networking has been installed, and you have defined a connection
for "MCnet Dialin", double click on "MCnet Dialin" to connect to the
communications server. It can take up to a minute for the connection
to complete. After your login is verified and you are connected, the
dial-up box will show a "Disconnect" button.
