General MCnet Setup

To all Students with MCnet Accounts:

Your username is the first part of your email address. For instance, joeuser@mc.edu has the username of joeuser. From this point on, this part of your email address will be referred to as your username, login, or your Novell username/login.

You have two passwords. The Novell password will be used to do any account maintenance, web page transfers, dial up access, and various other tasks (online phone directory). The GroupWise password will be used strictly for checking your mail. We suggest that you keep matching passwords to avoid confusion. Basically, when you change one, go ahead and change the other.

There are several ways to check your new email account:

You must use your Groupwise login and password for all email purposes.

• POP Mail Client (Netscape Messenger/Outlook Express)
  POP server: gwpop.mc.edu
  SMTP server: gwsmtp.mc.edu
  
  
• IMAP Mail Client* (Netscape Messenger/Outlook Express - seldom used)
  IMAP server: gwimap.mc.edu
  
  
• GroupWise Client*
  The GroupWise Client will be made available for download. However, it is 60MB, so don't try it unless your are using a network connection from NMRH or NWRH. or have a DSL/Cable connection.

* Your mailbox has a limit of 4MB. The system will automatically delete mail if you exceed this limit. Suggestion: Don't email yourself large files and ask your friends not to do so either.

Personal Web Page

Personal webpages are being stored on a server called MRWEB. For instructions on FTPing to MRWEB please read the FTP documentation at /mcnet/tutorials/ftp/. You must use your Novell login and password for FTP.

Account Administration

An Account Administration page has been created and is located at http://www.mc.edu/mcnet/admin/. You can find information about changing your passwords, requesting a web page if you do not already have one, submit a change request for your phone number/address in the online phone directory, or request to be unlisted in the online phone directory. You must use your Novell login and password for Account Administration.

Dial Up Access

You must use your Novell username followed by a period and the word students (for example: your-usersname-here.students) and Novell password when dialing into MC's modem pool. For dial-up instructions and how to properly use your username for dial-up purposes, please visit /mcnet/instructions/dialin.html.

Server Backup Schedule

Friday 5:00pm-Saturday 8:00pm - Full Backup of all servers
Monday-Thursday 2:00am-5:00am - Incremental Backup of all servers.
Network traffic may be slow during times of backups.

It may not be possible to check mail or upload changes to your web page at any given point during the backup process. If you are unable to access the server, wait a few minutes and try again.
