Are they ready for the real world?

The semester has ended and many MC students have headed home for the holidays. While sleeping and connecting with friends and family may be your son or daughter's top priority, it's never too early to think about the future. It can be confusing, frustrating and scary, but parents can help by gently reminding your child of the career planning resources and support available at Mississippi College.

Career planning is not just for juniors and seniors. Even if your child is a freshman or sophomore, now is the time to explore career options, prepare a resume, practice interviewing and find ways to gain real world experience.

It is important for students to realize that work experience makes them stand out in the competitive world of employment. Whether their goal is to work in ministry, take the corporate world by storm, or work in the family business, experience matters. Parents can help guide and direct their child by having a calm, thoughtful discussion about using MC Career Services and attending career related events on-campus.

Here are the top five career-related matters you can discuss with your son or daughter during the holiday break:

(1) Encourage your son or daughter to attend Career Day on Feb. 12, 2008 in Anderson Hall from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Recruiters and representatives from accounting firms, large corporations, hospitals, school districts and small businesses will be on-campus seeking to hire MC students and alumni. Throughout the day, faculty and staff will be on hand in Anderson Hall to review resumes and provide interview coaching. Encourage your son or daughter to attend this event.

(2) Remind your son or daughter to be smart about content on their Facebook and MySpace pages. More and more employers are checking these sites to assess a potential employee's character and judgment. The information and photos posted by students or their friends is considered public information. Tell them to get rid of anything that may be misinterpreted. This includes inappropriate jokes, lewd comments, profanity and questionable photos.

(3) Tell your student to ditch the clever voicemail message on their cell phone if they are interviewing or planning to do so. While friends and family may think the message is cute, think about the impression you're making on someone who doesn't know you. An employer may not understand your sense of humor or have time to grasp the cleverness of your voice message.

(4) If your son or daughter is undecided about a major, have them take the FOCUS online career assessment. This tool can help a student determine career preferences, interests and themes. Go to www.mc.edu/career, click on students, then click on FOCUS. To set-up a new account, enter the keycode: "Choctaws." Schedule an appointment with a Career Services professional to discuss your results. Call 601-925-3901.

(5) Register for the MC Career Central online job board. The job board lists all on-campus and off-campus employment. Career Services offers MC students and alumni resume creation support, resume reviews, interview coaching and arranges on-campus interviews. Career Central will be upgraded in January and students will receive more information on the new features. Parents, students and alumni can visit www.mc.edu/career or call 601-925-3901 with questions.
