Accounting Student Kimberly Sledge of Mississippi College Receives National Honor

MC accounting major Kimberly Sledge of Puckett, Mississippi receiving an award from the Association of Government Accountants in Washington,DC.

Mississippi College senior Kimberly Sledge networked with some of America’s most successful accountants and enhanced her business skills at a new leadership program in Washington, D.C.

Kimberly was among five students across the nation participating in the Association for Government Accountants collegiate leadership program.

Receiving a $1,000 scholarship enabled the 21-year-old Puckett, Mississippi resident to hear from hundreds of financial leaders who faced the challenges of working in the government arena.

“The networking opportunities were tremendous,” Sledge said. “I encourage other business students and accounting majors to explore opportunities in the public sector and in governmental services.”

During the meetings February 11-12,  the accounting major learned a great deal – from the importance of building relationships within an organization team to adapting to millennial generation differences.

Founded in 1950 as the Federal Government Accountants Association, the group expanded in 1975 to include state and local government sectors.

Mississippi College accounting professor Billy Morehead has remained active with the organization since beginning his career in state government in the mid-1980s. He’s served as the AGA national president and treasurer.

He’s delighted to see Sledge and Mississippi College receive the recognition at the conference of nearly 700 government financial management professionals.

“We are proud of her accomplishments as an accounting major and her representation of the MC School of Business,” Morehead said.

The  national organization selected college students who are well-rounded, excel in the classroom, are interested in government financial management, and penned well-written essays.

“I am truly grateful for this opportunity to represent the Mississippi College School of Business,” Kimberly said after her return to the Clinton campus.

Regarding her career plans, “I am very excited about the future and the plans that God has for my life,” the Mississippian said. After earning her MC degree, she hopes to work on her master’s and become a certified public accountant.
