Attorney La'Verne Edney, Summer Commencement Speaker

Jackson Attorney La'Verne Edney

Jackson attorney La’Verne Edney will be the guest speaker at Mississippi College’s summer graduation August 7.

The event is set for 10 a.m. that Saturday at the A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Clinton campus.  About 180 students are expected to receive diplomas.

Edney is on a two-year leave of absence from the law firm of Brunini, Grantham, Grower& Hughes, PLLC to serve as general counsel for the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project. The organization matches low-income Mississippians in need of civil legal services with lawyers willing to handle their cases pro bono. Her focus is also to recruit volunteer attorneys for the organization in Jackson.

Edney serves on the Mississippi College Board of Trustees and on the building campaign committee at the MC School of Law. She was the MC Law Young Lawyer of the Year in 2005-2006 and was named one of the top businesswomen in Mississippi by the “Mississippi Business Journal.”

Edney received her bachelor’s degree at Alcorn State University and worked for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning staff in Jackson before enrolling at the MC School of Law. Since she joined the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project in September 2009, more than 100 volunteer lawyers have signed on or renewed their commitment to assist with pro bono cases.
