Bible Across America Collects Mississippi College Verses

Bible Across America's tour logged 22,579 miles, including a stop at Mississippi College to collect hand-written verses. Soon, the newly penned Bible will be on sale at Christian bookstores nationwide.

That memorable visit to the Quad on the Clinton campus in December 2008 saw hundreds of MC faculty, staff and students write their favorite biblical passages.

Within weeks, the hand-written Bible will hit Christian bookstores from Mississippi to California. The nationwide release comes just in time for Christmas. The new Bible retails for $99.99.

The Bible Across America tour was launched with a Sept. 30, 2008 event at Zondervan's world headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The nine-month coast to coast tour also included stops at national landmarks, retail stores and churches.

Founded in 1826, Mississippi College is the nation's second oldest Baptist college. The group of visitors traveling on the blue and white tour bus met with members of the MC family near historic Provine Chapel.

"This helps spread God's word," said MC junior Marlee Miller, 20, of Memphis when the future missionary and English major joined the crowd on the Quad. The book is being printed by Michigan-based publisher Zondervan.

The release of the hand-written book marks the 30th anniversary of the Bible's New International Version translation.

Nearly nine months after hitting the road across America, the book bearing Scripture verses was inscribed by 31,173 people. Maureen "Moe" Girkins, the president and CEO of Zondervan, penned the final verse from Revelation 22:21: "The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen."

While it was an American tour, organizers also welcomed contributors from other nations, including Canada, Australia and India. The Bible makes a great Christmas gift. It is a best-seller that is never out of date. The oldest segment of the Old Testament is more than 2,600 years old.

In 1454 Johannes Gutenberg invented the mechanical printing press and made 180 copies of the Bible in Latin. Today, the Bible is also popular in audio version.
