Blood Drive Attracts Mississippi College Donors

Scores of Mississippi College students, faculty and staff gave the gift of life as they took part in a fall blood drive on the Clinton campus.

“People don’t realize how much certain blood types are needed,” said MC junior Stephanie Brandon. When a friend’s little sister needed a blood transfusion that got the kinesiology major involved as a blood donor.

Reports show there were more than 60 blood donations Tuesday and dozens more Wednesday at the Christian university’s Alumni Hall.

“You definitely should do it to help people out,” said MC nursing student Kamela Mullins, 19, of Memphis after making a blood donation Tuesday.

As a senior in the School of Nursing, Hannah O’Neal of Cleveland says she knows many patients need blood. “You never know when people need it.”

Mississippi Blood Services conducts four drives annually at Mississippi College and this was the first one this fall. Their next visit is set for Nov.30-Dec. 1.

With WJTV-12 cameras on campus to cover the event, MC senior Katy Sicola, 21, said giving blood is simply “a good thing to do.” The elementary education major from Houston, Texas also donated as part of a service project with her Swannanoa social tribe.

The blood drive wasn’t limited to students. Walter Frazier, an assistant professor of psychology and counseling, was among the donors. It wasn’t his first time. Frazier donated blood when he worked at the Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson.

Those signing up at MC were eligible to receive a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. All donors received T-shirts.

With its headquarters on Lakeland Drive in Jackson, Mississippi Blood Services supplies blood and blood products to hospitals in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee.
