Comedy of Errors Debuts at MC's Jennings Courtyard

One of William Shakespeare's earliest plays, "The Comedy of Errors" brings its slapstick humor to the Mississippi College campus in Clinton March 26.

Shakespeare's shortest comedy, the play tells the story of two sets of identical twins who were accidentally separated at birth. A major part of the humor deals with mistaken identity. Although the play was penned between 1592 and 1594, this farce remains popular with audiences in the 21st Century.

"The Comedy of Errors" has been adapted for opera, stage, screen and musical theatre. The play was adapted as a musical at least three times, first as "The Boys of Syracuse" with a score by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart. The play was a hit at the Carmel Shakespeare Festival in California in September 2008.

The Mississippi College version is directed by communication professor Phyllis W. Seawright, an MC graduate known for having a pretty good sense of humor.

People needing a little laughter in their lives are invited to the 7 p.m. MC student production that Friday evening. Tickets cost $7 for general admission and are $5 for all students, MC employees and senior adults.

This is the fifth show to be performed at Jennings Courtyard in the 21st Century. There will be a special treat for visitors that night. Shakespeare's birthday cake and punch will be served at intermission.

Two songs by MC music professor James Sclater will be performed in celebration of his long career in the Department of Music.

The play is part of the Mississippi College Shakespeare Festival that began in 1977.

Among the MC students in the show: Ann Howard of Canton plays Courtezan, while Matt Howard of Jackson stars as Dromio of Ephesus. Robert Leavelle of Clinton is cast as Solinus, the Duke of Ephesus. JoHanna Applegate of Ferriday, La. plays Luciana and Kim Dingess of Garland, Texas plays Angelo.
