Dental School Professor Speaks at Mississippi College


Dr. Robert "Scott'' Gatewood, a UMMC School of Dentistry professor.

A University of Mississippi Dental School professor, Dr. Robert Gatewood will discuss his career field at his alma mater, Mississippi College.

The MC Medical & Dental Alumni Association-sponsored Fall Lecture should attract plenty of students and instructors. The event Wednesday begins at 6:30 p.m. in Anderson Hall.

A 1980 MC graduate, Dr. Gatewood earned his DMD at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1984. He serves as a professor and chairman of the Department of Endodontics at the UMMC Dental School in Jackson. A prolific researcher and lecturer, Gatewood joined the faculty full-time in 1993. He was board certified by the American Board of Endodontics.

The UMMC professor served as president of the Mississippi Association of Endodontics for ten years. Dr. Gatewood is a two-time recipient of the Nelson Order at UMMC, an honor society recognizing teacher excellence. The MC Biology Department previously named him Alumnus of the Year.

Endodontics are experts in performing root canal treatment along with diagnosing and treating tooth pain.

A member of the Mississippi Army National Guard since 1994, Gatewood was promoted to the rank of colonel in 2008.

Dr. Gatewood grew up in Raymond. He and his wife, Cathy, are Clinton residents.
