Derek Walker of Mississippi College Wins Art Competition Award

Derek Walker's design for a logo for the 2014 Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition tied for second place.

Derek Walker’s creative design for a logo was good enough to win a 2nd place award at the Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition.

A 24-year-old Mississippi College graduate student, Walker works part-time as a graphic designer at Solve Design Studio in Ridgeland.

Walker’s logo finished in a tie for second place among collegians in the statewide contest. The Madison resident expects to receive his MFA at Mississippi College in May 2014.

“I am thankful that I placed in the competition, but more than anything I am glad to represent Mississippi College’s Graphic Design Department,” Walker said. “ I think it’s crucial for our students to be entering in competitions to have their names in the public eye as well as the department.”

The MC graduate chose to use the initials MCAC in a simple, clean font and added varying shadows to the type. There are no guidelines or directions given on the design other than it needed to be black and white.

Mississippi College art professor Steve Cook, a member of the Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition steering committee, is pleased Walker’s design was recognized. “Derek is a very talented designer and has represented himself and Mississippi College very well in recent years.”
