Educators Receive Award Designed to Boost Economic Literacy

Three Clinton educators each received $500 awards in a new program at Mississippi College designed to enhance their teaching of economics.

They include Yancy Beth Boothe, a teacher at Clinton Junior High who earned a master's in elementary education at MC in 2009 and MC graduate Jacob Kirchner, a teacher at Clinton High. The other award winner is Roxanna Arcement, a teacher at Sumner Hill Junior High.

They are participants in the MC Center for Economic Education and Development that opened in July 2009 at the Mississippi College School of Business. The center partners with the Mississippi Council on Economic Education in Jackson to boost economic literacy among teachers and students in the region.

The $500 awards were sponsored by the Armstrong Foundation. Quentin Brewer, the BancorpSouth branch manager and MCEE executive director Pam Smith, took part in the awards presentation to the teachers this week. BancorpSouth provided funds to help the teachers work towards their certification.

Presently, a half-dozen secondary teachers in the Clinton district are completing their Master Teacher of Economics certification and incorporating economics education into their classroom curriculum.

MC, Mississippi State University, the University of Southern Mississippi and Millsaps College are working with the council on economics education to train teachers around the Magnolia State.
