Family Weekend Set for September 24-25

Mississippi College professors will serve ice cream, there’s tailgating on the Quad, a Choctaws football game and much more during MC’s Family Weekend September 24-25.

Theatre lovers won’t want to miss MC’s musical version of “Little Women” and readers should note the annual book bazaar at Alumni Gym to benefit the Leland Speed Library. More than 10,000 books and other items will be on sale.

There were about 330 parents on hand for similar events at MC in October 2009, and big crowds are expected back this fall on the Clinton campus.

“We expect Family Weekend 2010 to be a memorable one, particularly for first-year students and their families,” said Joseph Odenwald, coordinator of student development. “We’re praying for good weather. The component of tailgating should be an added touch. Most of all, we hope for victories for the volleyball and football teams.”

Events Friday include the book sale at Alumni Gym from noon until 6 p.m. and the volleyball game at the Gold Dome that pits MC against Mary-Hardin Baylor at 5 p.m. The production of “Little Women” begins at 7 p.m. at Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall. At 8 p.m., there is a student talent show at Swor Auditorium.

After tribal breakfasts in the Jennings Courtyard at 10 a.m., Saturday’s events include the book bazaar at Alumni Gym from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., a 2 p.m. volleyball game with MC taking on UT-Dallas in the Gold Dome, and the 2 p.m. ice cream social at the Jennings Courtyard. There’s also tailgating starting at 3 p.m. and the MC football game at 6 p.m. against American Southwest Conference foe Louisiana College.

After church with students on Sunday, parents are invited to a 2 p.m. performance of “Little Women.” It is one of four weekend performances of the musical based on the novel penned by Louisa May Alcott.

Tickets for the football game are $4. For ticket information for “Little Women,” call 601.925.3440.
