"Harvey" Comes to MC

An invisible rabbit named Harvey that stands more than 6-feet tall is coming to a Mississippi College stage next month.

For a dozen MC students, it's the opportunity to shine in a fall show "Harvey" that's based on a 1944 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase, and a classic movie in 1950 starring Jimmy Stewart.

"Harvey" tells the story of a middle-aged man whose best friend is an invisible rabbit. Audiences at the production staged at Aven Little Theater should be in for a few laughs during the production Oct. 22-24 and Oct. 26-27. Show times are at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students, MC employees and senior adults.

In a nutshell, "Harvey" is "a wonderful 1940s comedy about the gift of the imagination," says MC communication professor Phyllis Seawright.

MC communication professor Sandra Grayson is directing the play. A 1978 MC graduate, this is her first MC production since she was a student on the Clinton campus in 1975.

But Grayson has been involved in high school productions for 27 years before joining the faculty here in August. Her last teaching post was at Northwest Rankin High in Brandon. "It's been a blast," she said of her duties as "Harvey" director at casting calls and rehearsals in recent weeks.

The big star of the show is MC student Jim Schnadelbach of Clarksdale, a veteran of MC productions. He plays the character of Elwood P. Dowd (the man with the imaginary rabbit), the part played by Jimmy Stewart on the silver screen.

MC's theater season also includes one-act plays Nov. 13-14 with tickets costing $3 at the door for performances beginning at 7 p.m. "The Fall one-acts are never predictable, and could range from the comic to the bittersweet," Seawright says.

Other productions at MC include William Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors" March 26-27 at 7 p.m. and March 28 at 2 p.m. in Jennings Courtyard. Seawright is serving as the show's director. A Shakespeare Festival and Renaissance Faire on April 10 in the Jennings Courtyard will round out the season with food, fun and a little drama.
