International Festival Booked March 26

Hosts from China, India and Kyrgyzstan will share the stage at Swor Auditorium as Mississippi College showcases international talent on March 26.

That's the date to mark for the annual International Festival on the Clinton campus. The event goes from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with refreshments to be served following the show in the lobby of Nelson Hall.

Mississippi College is home to about 300 international students from around the globe. They include about 200 students from China.

Audiences can expect to see some spectacular performances that Friday evening, organizers say.

"There will be dancing and musical performances, as well as a fashion show of traditional dress around the world," says Carrie Lassetter, the programs coordinator at MC's International Center.

The program is free and open to MC faculty, staff, students and the Jackson metro community.

Sponsored by MC's International Center, the festival is designed to celebrate all the different cultures on the Clinton campus, Lassetter says.

Last year's performances included martial arts with Taekwondo and Tai Chi demonstrations. Traditional Chinese songs, Tibetan dance, and the 20-minute fashion show led by students from China, Nepal, India, Taiwan, Vietnam and South Korea were a hit with the Swor Auditorium audience in March 2009.

International student enrollment has skyrocketed at MC in recent years. There were just nine international students enrolled when President Lee Royce arrived as the school's leader in 2002.
