International Festival Celebrates Eighth Season at Mississippi College

A scene from the 2014 International Festival.

Mississippi College students from India, China, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Nepal and other lands around the globe will be the stars at MC’s 2015 International Festival.

Singing, dancing or displaying the traditional attire of their countries, the talented students always put on a culturally enriching show.

The university’s Office of Global Education invites the MC family and metro Jackson residents to its eighth annual International Festival on April 10. The entertainment begins 6:30 p.m. that Friday evening in Swor Auditorium.

Musical selections on the bamboo flute, the accordion, and piano, a fashion show plus amazing dancers in colorful sarees will be featured that night on the Clinton campus. Moments after the two-hour program, visitors can sample a wide array of international cuisine in the Nelson Hall lobby.

MC’s international student population has climbed dramatically under the leadership of Mei-Chi Piletz, executive director of the Office of Global Education. Over the past two years, enrollment doubled. There are just over 400 international students attending classes this spring.

Ositadimma “Chris” Anakor, a Mississippi College student from Nigeria, is excited to be part of the entertainment lineup at this spring’s festival. He’s singing “Woju,” a song promoting the role of African women and the culture in his native land.

Year after year, the show is definitely a crowd pleaser for audience members, including President Lee Royce, his wife, Rhoda, and Vice President for Academic Affairs Ron Howard.

Tickets at the door cost $5 for MC students, $7 for faculty and staff and $15 for the public. Prices are reduced for tickets purchased in advance.
