Jackson Academy Student Named Hederman Scholar

Avery Caldwell

Avery Caldwell combines stellar academic skills with artistic talent and a heart for community service.

An 18-year-old Jackson Academy graduate from Brandon, Caldwell is the latest to be named a Hederman Scholar at Mississippi College’s School of Business.

School of Business Dean Marcelo Eduardo in July announced the award going to an outstanding MC freshman who plans to major in business on the Clinton campus.

“We are glad to have someone as talented as Avery continue to represent the high achievements that this scholarship embodies,” Eduardo said.

Her list of awards is numerous, including membership in the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society. Outside the classroom, Avery showed talent as a dancer in school productions like “West Side Story,” and was active in her community, including volunteer roles with Mustard Seed, Habitat, the March of Dimes and Jackson Academy Thanksgiving food drives.

The former JA volleyball player says she’s thrilled to be the recipient of the prestigious award, among the biggest at the Christian university’s School of Business.

“Receiving the Hederman scholarship was a complete and wonderful surprise to me,” Avery said. “I am very grateful to Dr. Eduardo for choosing me as the recipient.”

Other Hederman Scholars currently enrolled at the MC School of Business are: Sawyer Smith, Ryan Dunbar and Caleb Ward. With more than 6,000 graduates, the MC School of Business has produced CEOs, CFOs, and other executive leaders in organizations around Mississippi, the United States and around the world.

As for a career, the MC freshman is undecided at the moment. “I am not completely sure on which path I am going to choose.” But give her time. “I am sure that I will figure it out with the help of my Mississippi College education.”

As a new MC student starting in late August, Avery looks forward to getting involved in intramurals and social tribes and plans to study abroad.

She’s the daughter of Kevin and Michele Caldwell.
