Karaoke Rocks Mississippi College Staff Club

Karaoke performances return to the Jazzman's porch at Mississippi College on Wednesday Sept. 16 when MC Staff Club members "perform" pop tunes live with high-energy and raw talent to boot. Lunch begins at noon followed by showtime.

Whether they miss every note or only skip a few beats, MC employees come alive on stage with dreams of "American Idol" appearances spinning in their heads. Performers chow down for lunch at Jazzman's and soon let loose, musically speaking. President Lee Royce was among those on hand for the initial barrage of karaoke tunes last fall.

Wild applause mixed with groans in Staff Club audiences a year ago. This year's version will also be in good fun as the MC Staff Club kicks off its 2009-2010 season in style. Last fall's karaoke showstoppers included acts from the MC Office of Public Relations, the Office of International Programs, and the university's maintenance department that made Elvis leave the building!

Who will step up to the stage this year? Word has it that various acts are warming up, at least least mentally. "The acts in 2008 were fun," says Staff Club President Kathy Gibbs. Anyone is welcome to bring their talent or tape, she says. But there should be a karaoke machine going with the lyrics posted on screens nearby the stage to help performers get through it.

For those new to this form of entertainment, karaoke allows amateurs to sing along with recorded music using a microphone or public address system, says Wikipedia. Further research on the Wikipedia web site shows the North Korean government banned karaoke bars in July 2007.

But MC has no plans to ban it. In fact. Staff Club organizers say karaoke is back by popular demand. The talent show on the Clinton campus end around 1:15 p.m.

Other events being discussed until a Faculty Appreciation Day, another fantastic performance by Ballet Magnificat, and a trip next spring to Providence Hill Farm, home of MC's equestrian team. Staffers are looking at the possibility of a meeting at the Baptist Healthplex.

Door prizes will be given out to lucky Staff Club members showing up at the group's monthly meetings. The luncheons are designed to give MC employees time for good food and fellowship.
