M.B.A. Program Enjoys Record Enrollments

Mississippi College's M.B.A. program is bursting at the seams with record enrollments amid the nation's troubled economy.

It's been a steady climb in enrollment with the program's 160 students in 2005 growing to 262 students this fall, new reports show. There were 207 students enrolled two years ago.

"Today's job market is competitive and our M.B.A. program is putting our students in a position to successfully advance their careers," said School of Business Dean Marcelo Eduardo. Founded in 1947, the School of Business is the largest one at MC.

Mississippi College's M.B.A. program is also the largest in metro Jackson and the second largest in the Magnolia State. The program's growth helped boost MC's enrollment to a record 4,887 students this fall, up 1 percent from a year ago.

Mary Ellen Lawrence of Jackson, one of the newcomers to the M.B.A. program, is impressed with the quality of the faculty and staff at the School of Business headquarters in Self Hall. "These are men and women who freely assist in the success of their students," the graduate student said.

A Belhaven College graduate, Lawrence says everybody from Dean Eduardo to the business professors make it a point to keep their doors open to students. "The access to faculty and staff is indicative of the entire School of Business."

Other selling points for the School of Business are found in the extensive Self Hall renovations since 2007. The steady improvements have revitalized the College Street facility that dates back to the 1960s.

Major improvements to the building's auditorium, live financial tickers streaming the latest information from Wall Street plus new classrooms are some of the changes at Self Hall.

"With the recent renovations, Self Hall is state of the art," Lawrence said. "The classes are challenging and relevant."

MC now offers general masters in business administration degrees plus an M.B.A. concentration in accounting. Over the past two years, MC added M.B.A. degrees with concentrations in finance and management information systems.

Eduardo is more than pleased. "The enrollment in our M.B.A. program continues to grow and students are becoming more interested in pursuing a concentration such as accounting or finance."
