MC Among Best Online Masters in Higher Education Administration

Mississippi College’s online master’s program in higher education is rated among the top 25 on USA campuses.

So says the website TheBestSchools.org in a November news release.

Officials with TheBestSchools.org say they selected the online program in MC’s School of Education based on its academic excellence, courses, faculty strengths and reputation.

The website rated MC’s program No. 15 on its list. The Penn State World Campus was rated No. 1, followed by the University of Nebraska’s main campus in Lincoln. The University of Louisville College of Education and Human Development in Kentucky was listed in third place, while Hofstra University in New York was judged fourth best.

Mississippi College stands in pretty good company to earn a spot on this list, said Graduate School Dean Debbie Norris. Other schools rated in the top ten included West Virginia University, the University of Houston, the University of Wisconsin System’s eCampus at Oshkosh, Drexel University in Philadelphia and Georgia Southern University.

“I’m very proud to find us among those ranked in this poll,” Norris said Friday.

The MC on-line program in higher education administration presently enrolls 20 students. As many as 32 students have taken classes. The program averages 10 graduates per year for the past five years, according to School of Education Dean Don Locke.

TheBestSchools.org is viewed as a leading reference for prospective students seeking a college or university degree in a variety of fields.

Professor Cindy Melton, who chairs the Teacher Education Department on the Clinton campus, is delighted the online program at the Baptist-affiliated university earned national recognition.

The online master’s in higher education, she said, “is a rigorous program that provides excellent training and preparation. It can lead to wonderful opportunities for our students.”

The MC program offers classes in such subjects as community college administration, organizational behavior, higher education law, finances and personnel management. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there’s a 15 percent employment growth for the postsecondary education administration field from 2012 through 2022. The median national salary for the field is $87,410.

Melton says the program is strengthened by a stellar list of faculty members who include several MC vice presidents. They include Norris, Steve Stanford, Bill Townsend and Jim Turcotte.
